All going along nicely, steep learning curve as I haven't touched an Apple since the Apple IIe back in 1979!!! That was what got me into computers back then, started a full time computer course the next year and so on...............

Incidentally, this beast of a machine is;

MacBook Pro 15inch 2.66GHz (Intel Core i7, 4Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 512 MB, SD card slot, Intel HD Graphics, up to 9 hour battery life) :-)

Successfully bootcamped with 400gigs for W7 64bit version (can that partition size be altered afterwards?). Already had W7 Upgrade that I tried on my HP laptop, but, had video driver issues with it, so, returned it to Vista. Lately been having video driver errors again. W7 was complaining that the serial was invalid as it is an upgrade version (and was activated for the HP laptop) which, technically, you're not supposed to clean install as a full version. Found lots of info on the net last night as it is a genuine legit W7. Managed to get W7 activated legally, that made me very happy, thought I was going to have trouble getting it registered.

VDJ installed on both the Mac & W7 sides. Hercules RMX drivers installed on the both sides, but, the ASIO drivers won't go in on either side. Got a few video effects pluggins for the W7 side, but, some seem to be missing from the VDJ site. Gonna transfer them from the PC laptop, DirectX to transfer and install..... and VDJ Database file. Then hit the HD drive with the Video & Music Databases, that will fill the hard drive lol. Just need the small bits like banners, sample drops, etc., etc.

Got to get a Mini Displayport to VGA adapter from the Applestore today then, all being well, we're just about ready to go. :-)

Anybody wanna buy an HP 17" laptop? Hardly used, like new :-)

You don't need ASIO in the Mac side.

Regards.

Cheers, thanks, wasn't aware of that, as I said, steep learning curve.

Got everything up and running on both versions. Got a few tweaks to do on the W7 version, the ASIO is still not going in properly and getting ASIO driver errors.

Can't seem to get the scrolling text working. Had problems when I installed the C++ runtime stuff, it killed my vjd database with all the analysis. Got it back with a system restore.

The Mini Displayport to VGA works fine, just have to set the screens in W7 rather than the nVidia control panel.

Not gonna rush into using tonight (still got the HP anyway), need to do some more testing and getting everything ready without rushing.

OK, still had ASIO problems as well as some others, so, decided to abort W7 64bit and start again with W7 32bit as there was nothing else on this Windows partition. This time I've kept the Windows partition down to 32gb. Got VDJ installed but something called "work" got in the way. Been using Videos from my external for testing, dunno whether to do that or load them onto the Apple partition. Will investigate further.

First gig tonight with the Macbook Pro beast worked fine.

I used the Bootcamped W7 version and loaded videos from my external USB 500gb HD. I still can't seem to get the ASIO drivers to install properly for the Hercules RMX, so, I am using WDM. I also found that I cannot startup my system with the RMX connected thru USB. I have to wait til W7 is up and running before I can connect the RMX, otherwise, VDJ will not see it, even with a "rescan for devices". That is a bit of a weird problem.

I had one video not display but the music continued. The pluggins I normally use worked fine; Logo and SBDJ Scrolltext. I couldn't shut VDJ down at the end of the gig, but, I usually disconnect the RMX and remove the external HD as the video is showing "Bar Closed" on the screens. So, it could be to do with that, my other laptop doesn't crash when doing this.

I didn't use my cooling plate and found that this laptop gets seriously hot, dunno whether it's because of it being aluminum or because of the i7 processor or more likely a combination of the two. I will be using the cooling plate from now on though.

All in all a relatively successful first gig with this setup.

Well, got the timecode vinyls working tonight on both Mac and W7 after a few problems. The ASIO drivers are still not working on W7, so, using WDM.

Was thinking of selling my 1210s, not so sure now. The setup looks great, if I get into it a bit more I may install the 1210s in my residency. It's a bit late to make a noise, so, tomorrow I'm gonna blast the neighbours :-)

I have the exact same Mac as you. I bought it the minute it was released. I still use my PC's to operate VDJ because I still haven't been able to configure the aggregate device. I've read the other posts on how to do it including screen shots but I can't locate the "Aggregate Device Editor". I don't want to bootcamp my Mac. Is it really necessary and if not why are people doing it to run VDJ?

Hi Rude
I don't know anything about the "aggregate device editor" or why you would want to use it. Presumably it's for a bit of external kit that you use.

I've Bootcamped my Mac because the PC version of VDJ has lots of pluggins & skins that are not available on the Mac version, especially when using video. If they were, then I would probably use the Mac version. I am going to be using the Mac side for everything else. I found it better to install W7 32bit rather than the W7 64bit, I had driver problems with the 64bit version. Bootcamping a Mac is sooooo much easier than dual booting a PC. Nothing to it, very simple to do. I've done it twice in a week, once with W7 64bit then reset it and did it again with W7 32bit.

I have done 3 gigs with the Mac now and very pleased with it. May be my imagination, but, the Mac just seems so rock solid and feel very confident with it. Love the backlit keyboard, I'm always typing in requests at my residency which is pretty dark in the booth and the backlit keyboard makes this so much easier.

Tonight I used the Firetext free pluggin for the first time and was able to use a PNG file to display the club name. The Firetext pluggin wouldn't work on my previous HP laptop. I'm currently using all my mp3s and Videos from an external 500gb HD, I have 500gb onboard but not sure whether to put all my vids & mp3s on or leave them external. Have carried the HP to the gigs just as a backup safety net, but, now I'm confident enough with the Mac to leave the HP at home. Will be selling the HP shortly as it still has some residual value in it.

I started this thread as a progress report on the switch to try and help those that are often asking/thinking of moving from PC to Mac. If there's anything I can help you with let me know.
Cheers
Les

Thanks Les. I did manage to figure it all out and the Mac version is just fine with me. I really don't use the plug-ins much anyway and as for effects I use a Pioneer DJM-800 so I don't need the VDJ FX...

Some day I may bootcamp it with Vista 64 but for now it's all good...

There seems to be plenty of sound effects for the Mac version, it's the lack of video effects that's the problem.

After using the Firetext Pluggin last night I was very impressed with it. I believe that they are going to make a Mac version of it. If that happens then I would probably use the Mac version of VDJ.

I don't own a Mac which makes porting my video plugins to the Mac platform very difficult. I did have a hackintosh setup, but honestly it's not ideal.

Yeh, I can understand that Scott, that's why I bootcamped with W7 32bit and use that version in my gigs.

Currently using your SBDJ Scroll Text in combination with the Firetext Pluggin. With Firetext I can use a PNG file to display the venue name across the top of the screen. But, I like your pluggin for the scrolling text as I can save the file and just load it at my next gig instead of having to retype everything.

Must try and get around to recording a short demo video to put on my website.

Annoyingly I'm unlikely to have the spare cash to buy a Mac with any time soon either. You never know though!

I'm determined to get that damned update to ScrollText out though; you'll love the next version when it eventually drops!

Tease!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

Scott,

Surely you must get something from the grooveshark fees as I read that a percentage goes to the most active plugin developers. You must be up there with the best!

I do indeed but it would take some time to save up for a Mac from that!

Yeh, Macs are expensive. Just gotta figure out how I'm gonna pay my credit card, I've got til September. Think I need an eBay day lol

Car has been in for MOT over the weekend, another £375 on the CC!!! Arrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhl

I guess there are not as many zeros on the end as I thought ......

Is there not a cheat to install Mac OS on a normal PC?

I guess with everything it's finding the time to do all this extra stuff. I have a 7 year old boy, full time job, part time DJ job, large garden, 2 cars to keep clean and a serious gadget problem. I would love to learn how to program but it's just lack of time getting in the way!

If Atomix do indeed sell "thousands" of licences a month as was quoted not so long ago (add the figures up yourself) then maybe it would be to their advantage to sort you out with a Mac which would be a very small percentage of the income :)
