so Looking to probably buy a new external, read a few posts but a lot of thoughts were from a while ago, so just wondering what people think is a good suggestion for a hard drive these days.

I have been using WD.

my 2 fave choices at moment are to get

Western Digital 1TB My Passport Studio
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005MHN53K/ref=dra_a_cs_mr_hn_it_P1400_1000?tag=dradis-21

or
LaCie Rugged Triple USB 2.0 1TB (FW800 / FW400
http://www.amazon.co.uk/LaCie-Rugged-Triple-FW800-FW400/dp/B003SO4F38/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=14TIM9VZ4EGQW&coliid=I3CI7DQK85PPD8

anyone have any thoughts on these or other suggestions.

and what do people think on having a separate power supply for hard drives as opposed to be powered by usb/firewire etc. as both the above suggestions are powered.

many thanks.

I'm looking for a harddrive aswell. Make sure you don't have to format it to a mac, before buying it.

I bought a HD from OWC, I bought the 4TB drive that has 2-2TB drives in a RAID 1 configuration. Their customer service is awesome as well & it comes with a 3 year guarantee with 48 hour warranty turnaround. It comes formatted for MAC by default, but they'll format it for Win/Mac use. It's a super quiet device, can't hear it at all.

It's on the expensive side, but I think it's worth it.

I am a big fan of the WD Passport Studio. I have the 2tb firewire version, works great and is small in size.

Go with Firewire, it is more stable that USB and you dont use up a USB port

I have a Seagate Goflex that is USB 3.0. My MBPro is only USB 2.0. They sell a docking base that would upgrade the drive to Firewire. Would this boost performance? or cause issues?
