I just downloaded the free home version of virtual dj. All I really need to do is mix two songs and add a decent transition in the middle, but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Any help is appreciated.

First of all it is important to select 2 suitable tracks for your fist mixing lesson. When you drop a song in each deck, the software will analyse the beats per minute and the key of the song . At the beginning choose songs which have almost the same bpm and key
Try to match the same beat when playing and prelistenig both songs and try find a an appropriate part in the tracks to try your transition.
There are a lot of tuturials about how to use vdj and how to practice ( that is one of the essential things...;-)

roBroY gave a good explanation. I had you're same question when got onto VDJ. First thing I did was read the sticky's at the top of this forum. They really helped. Keep practicing and eventually you'll understand the concept of mixing.
Good Luck!
