My sound card is a generic 7.1 USB surround device. You MUST set the wasapi to yes or you will only have channel 1 &2.
And get this... you can actually assign outputs..... and they WORK!!!!! Not limited to the first 3 (well, 6).
Regarding my beloved DAC-3, you can tell it to not use the factory, but the custom mapper if you have one (I do).
Once set, it works JUST like my 7.x setup. But sounds oh so much better.
Based on my recent tests and how I do things, it will be used for this coming weekend's gig. If any issues, there is always 7.
