In 1865 have the crossfader disabled and i use the volume controls on my controller, I have the video crossfader set to linked and auto the video crossfader doesnt work. In 7 when it was set this way the volume controls moved the video crossfader. Is this a bug or is this the way 8 is now set up

Auto and Link cant work together. In your case, Auto needs to be enabled. If you have disabled the crossfader, then the Volume faders should indeed move the Video crossfader automatically. and it works fine here.
Keep in mind that the Video transitions now take care on how the video crossfader bahaves/moves, so it may be up to the selected transition.
