My brother used to be a dj in the 90's and he used to play uk garage in clubs he has recently stopped DJing and he gave me his 1210's, (yes I'm still in the stone age haha) I'm looking into time code but not sure where to start I just want a setup for my bedroom nothing more at the moment

As far as VirtualDJ is concerned you will need either the Pro Infinity or subscriber licences. You can try timecode for 10 minutes in the home free version to see how you get on.
You will also need a sound card or controller to pass through the timecode signal to the software.
