I download songs, add to playlist and save. When I restart PC, most songs are X'd out and are not playable. They are gone and nowhere to be found on the pc, default my docs/VDJ not there either. FAQ's say to backup playlist AND database but does not explain HOW to do this. I re-download and save, same thing, X'd out not playable, files vanished from pc. What am I doing wrong?

Open iTunes Preferences:
Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences. If you can't see the menus, learn how to turn on iTunes menus in Windows 7 and 8.

From where?

Songs downloaded from VDJ8, I do a search for a tune, right click on it and click on "download to cache" and watch download progress %. If I don't shut down PC, I can play all songs forever. When I do shut down and restart more than half of the songs that were playing fine and "green" now have a red "X" and won't load. I have a content unlimited subscription.

Have you attempted to re-cache the tracks with the red x? I believe a cached file is only good for 30 days.
You cannot backup these files.

I'm sorry, but I do not think this is completely correct.
I copy my cache to an external drive all the time.
You can also refresh the cache on them even if they are in a different directiry.
Take a look here:
