Could just be this Denon MCX8000 controller that I purchased used, but I get no sound from the headphones during cue. I haven't hooked up my external speakers, so I'm just using internal computer speakers - but I can't imagine that is affecting anything.

Where is your headphones connected to ?
What do you have in VDJ Settings as Audio Setup (screenshot would help)

This was fixed after firmware update. Thanks for the quick response!
