I wouldn't say it's vital, but it has been requested on a regular basis.
Thankfully it's possible to sync VDJ with more fully featured samplers via Ableton Link.

for a run of samples you could use a silent track with action poi calling samples, for a drum machine type idea it would be similar but harder and a bit more messy
