on my mix, Auto Gain Clips the music and distorts it! on some songs that had already been normaized and clean 0.0db in Sound Forge.

Make sure that you "analyze" all your files before playing them ... right click the file name and select analyze. This enables atoimx to find the median level of the track and matches it to the previous track when auto-gain is enabled.
And always make sure to set it at a level NO greater that +2dB
