Mixer or Hercules DJ Console for start mix?

3 channel would make sense if you can afford it. If you are DJing and your PC crashes you could have, say, an iPOD plugged into the third channel and quickly switch to that whilst you fix the PC.

Actuallly most of the 2 channel mixer have a way to convert a phono in into a line in, which makes them a virtual 4 channel mixer (4 channels plugged into the mixer, but you can mix only 2 at the same time). Change to emergency channel by switching between CD/phono on the table.

here's another reason to use an external mixer:
try to slide the volume sliders rapidly on your console, you'll notice a small latency.

small, but just enough to decide to use an external mixer.
btw: if you record into mp3 using the built-in option of VDJ, you'll also notice that both channels are recorded simlutaniously including pre-listen and cueing actions (pitty).

you can work around this by doing your recording using another util like soundforge or wavelab form the line-in connected to the main output of your mixer. It works for me :]

to make a long story short: i'd advice you to use an external mixer.
