Sujet Upgrading computer.......comments before I do

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

My main computer has a motherboard by Gigabyte model k8 triton GAK8NSC-939 running at 250mhz with AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 2 gig ddr3200 ram, (2) 300 gig maxtor 7200rpm drives, Nvidia fx5200 128meg video card by leadtek, internal 8 channel realtek ac97 audio...........The only problem I have with the program (performance wise) is when I load a new video the computer monitor freezes (and subsequently mouse and virtual dj controls) when I use divxpro 6.2.5 (749x480) .avi files, no problem with mpeg2 viles at same resolution..............I have tried every possible combination of settings, windows tweeks suggested on this board, registry tool, etc. and nothing is working to solve this problem. It will take between 50 and 57 seconds to load a video and this means 57 second with no control of computer................I am thinking of upgrading to an AMD 64 x2 dual core 4200+ and 3 gigs of ram and keeping the rest the same..............dev team, tech support, help me out. Will this solve my freezing problem (keep in mind it is ONLY the computer monitor which freezes and not the external tv out).

Isn't the Fx5200 only a 64bit memory interface? That's a pretty low video card, maybe just try getting an updated card, evrything else looks fine

There is Fx5200 with 128bit but this GPU is way too slow, it is the entry level and I don't recommend it for video use with VDJ. Consider upgrade on 7600Gt.

Your computer is fine. Just upgrade the video card to a mainstream model.

Im running same specs as you but with a 6800, and no problems :)

Im guessing you tried that registry program on these forums that allows you to enable the fast load video?

As the others said, the problem is with the video card. The 5200 has issues with vdj. As alf said upgrade to a 6600gt (agp) or a 7600gt if you have a pcix slot.

Anybody know of a half height 6600gt vidoe card? This computer is in a 2 space rack case and full height cards won't fit...........vga slot by the way, no pci express.

You could user a riser card, for your 2u

Be careful with the riser card. I had all sorts of issues. Tried several video card PCIX and two different riser cards and never got it to work. Had to go back to a straight PCI card ATI... Haven't needed the video too much but in the winter I will try again..

no room because I have cards in the pci slots and the agp riser goes in that direction and when I bought the computer I originally had a riser with a regular pci video card and it would not recognize the card.

That is the problem with small factor cases, my Fx5900Xt 128Mb is so big, like a half of a motherboard! It will never fit in :) . So you might have the problem because 7600Gt is big also, and all of them are alike (has the same PCB, more or less). Try to find 6600Gt, should be smaller though.

Okay, which makes more sense to upgrade the processor or the video card........ I have another case I can use which will fit in the turntable well of my dj coffin. It has the same athlon 64 xp 3200+ with 2 gigs of ram and a built in video (don't know what), but it has a pci express slot..............So, am I better off with using the rackmount with the fx5200 128mg video and upgrading processor to the 64 x2 dual core 4200+, or using the small footprint (but full 5-1/4 card slot) case with the 64 3200+ and upgrading the video card to a 7600 or similar...........does it matter if I go with ati or nvidia. I know ati has a wider range of half height cards than nvidia.........if I go to ati what card is recommended (not minimum something that will absolutely work).

Depends... If you are planning on doing video, I would say you need a good video card. Personally I don't like ati, I know others have had sucess with ati card, but fyi the dev team uses nvidia cards in their test boxes. 6600GT & 6800GT's have a proven track record to perform quite well in vdj. Since the main video out is rendered in hardware upgrading the processor is kinda pointless. VDJ runs quite well on a 3000+ athlon 64 with a 6600gt all day long. The 7600gt is a newer model, I plan on getting one in the comming weeks to test with vdj, but looking at the spec's its a bit faster then the 6600gt.

No way that card is going to work its much to slow

Memory Interface 64-bit

You need at least 128 bit, 256 is even better

Memory on Board 256MB DDR

You need Gddr3 ram to run video correctly 128megs of gdd3 will out perform gdd1

RAMDAC Support 400MHz

Much to slow, you need at least 500mhz

Bottom line is this card is no better then the fx5200 you already have.

Well explained Cyder, and I agree, 6200 is a entry level card and it is way to slow.

Okay, to the small footprint case I will go. How is this one? Found it at Tiger Direct for only $199. Can probably get it cheaper locally at Fry's if they have one with same specs.

DiabloTek GeForce 6800 GS / 512MB GDDR3 / PCI Express / DVI / VGA / TV Out / Video Card

Performance = GPU/VPU NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS
RAMDAC = Dual 400 MHz
Memory = Video Memory 512MB
Memory Type = 256-bit GDDR3
Connections = Interface Type PCI Express
Connector(s) = DVI, TV/S-Video, VGA (D-Sub)

Sounds good but I never hear of Diablo, can't say it is good. Here in Serbia we have other brands like Microstar (the fastest with new cards), Asus, Gigabyte, Foxconn, Leadtek etc. I still think that 7600Gt is the better choice, but Cyder will tell :)
