I've been reading a great many forums on video playing, from experienced VJ's The consesus seems to be to convert to mpeg1 since its easier to move back and forth through the video when cueing. The more compressed the video is the more computing power it takes to scan through the video. Mpeg-4 is a great format in that it provides you a great picture at a small size but its so highly compressed, that many computers will lag as it scans through.
That being said I found a great free program for macs called MPEG StreamClip that will convert VOBs to just about any format. It converts in batch and does an excellent job.
Of course you can always rip from your original DVD to mpeg-1 and bypass this step all together, however its nice having a backup of your original files.

i've been using mpeg streamclip for a while. it's the swiss army knife of working with mpeg videos.
