Sujet: Home Networking Question

I know this isnt a Virtual DJ question but i know there are alot of people here who have alot more computer knowledge than me and i need help. I am tring to transfer my music files from one laptop to another and i have a router at home so i want to connect the two laptops so i can just share the folder and send it that way! i have tried but cant seem to get it to work. is there a step by step guide anybody knows of on how to do this?

Ok i dont know the right terms so bare with me! I have a modem which i have a wireless router connected. I do not have any computer connected directly to the router im just using two laptops which connect to the router with wifi to access the internet! What i want to do is connect the two computers so that they can share files. I have tried setting up a home network and pinging the computers but they do not recognize one another. Now they both do accress internet but on both of them the LAN has the little red x on it. My question i guess is do i need them to actually be connected to the router with an ethernet cable for them to network? They both connect to the internet fine... i have looked at tuturials and everything and it makes it out to be so easy but yet i follow the steps and im not sure if im doing it right or what! (LAN = x but wireless is ok does that have something to do with it?)
