When I open the effects tab there is an activate button in the middle of the window which allows you to turn on or off your selected effect, but for whatever reason when I try to select any of the effects on the left this button disappears and a large grey rectangle appears below it. Why is this happening and what can I do to fix it?

are you using the default fx
some older fx are not supported from home edition.
