I’m going to be purchasing my hardware / software very soon for my DJ system (would love to do this tomorrow) but I just cant make up my mind … I have been learning / testing Virtual DJ and am very impressed with it … and have decided that’s the software I want to run.
It’s the hardware that im having difficulty with.
So here are some of my questions.
Do I need a Mixer and a Controller? I would much rather have a laptop plugged into a controller then out to my amp .. but if I need both I will probably just go with a mixer.
If I can get away with just a controller.. what one gives the most bang for the buck ? ease of use for a rookie is a plus .. and integration with Virtual DJ is a big plus .. I don’t see me scratching anytime soon .. but I still want to make some hot mixes .. and I find some of the controls cumbersome with the mouse.
When it comes to listening to tracks threw headphones.. it’s a pain in the ass… is there an easy way to do that with a controller or mixer? ….
Right now if I have a track playing on deck A .. I have to move my fader over to the left(track A) .. then move my headphone fader over to the right(trackB) … then I have to right click the track I wish to pre listen to .. Select listen.. then chose deck B … before I can listen in the headphones… please tell me there is an easier way.
I would love to just click listen on a track .. and have always go to my headphones without worrying about it playing threw my speakers … not sure if this is possible though.
Anyway … sorry for rambling on so much … and thank every one for any advice they can give.

Dude, it sounds like the Hercules mkII is perfect for you! It's a sound card and controller all in one. It's got jog wheels, a crossfader and all sorts of other controls. You plug your headphones into it for previewing tracks, and it has native support in VDJ (it even comes with a limited version of VDJ!!). All this for about $250. If I were you, I'd snatch one of these up!
