What is better... Coke or Pepsi ;)

Serato is a pure turntable timecode control vinyl program, with few features and no support for external controllers. Also locked to one soundcard.
As it has few features, and have main focus on timecode vinyl control only, its said to be very good at this one task ;)

VDJ has a LOT more features, including those of Serato. pluss MANY more.. Like auto-bpm detection, open soundcard support, midi support, timecode control support, live sampler, custom skins, effect engine etc etc etc

Its totally up to you what you think is best for you ;) Coke or Pepsi...

Wrote more, as you wrote your post.. the above is a pretty objective view.

Some say SSL is best.. Some say VDJ is best.

For pure timecode vinyl control, and nothing more... Many will say SSL has a tiny edge over VDJ

For almost all other features, most will say VDJ is better

Hope that helps ;)

ok now that I heard that, will my cdj1000 be compatible with this system?

yes, you can use CDJ1000 to control VDJ...

And not only that, timecode CDs are FREE for download here (unlike other DJ software)

Go for VDJ-Coke ;) tastes better.. hehe

and as far as timecode goes VDJ has come leaps and bounds since its early days, one or two distracting problems, but fundamentaly its well up there. maybe not much on traktor scratch [do a youtube, looks quality stuff] funny to see NI take a step away from stanton on this one. the original scratchamp code has now been realeased in the form of a public SDK, open-sourced if you like. but still, VDJ is a long way from where it started, and getting better every release (much more frequent than many other softwares) perhaps we will see a larger focus on improvements to the timecode system in one of the next couple of updates. after all i dont think numark would apreciate a product lauched under its name with such nigling problems

Well, for timecode vinyl maybe..

But for timecode CD there are little room for improvements..Seriously...

I use it at gigs two times a week, and it works JUST AS the Pioneer decks on real CDs..
So its pretty damn flawless;)

No kidding,..
