Well, every Sunday evening I do the roller rink thing. However it is not the norm.
What we do there is line dancing. Yep I said line dancing. Thing is that the Roller Rink used to do this a few years back and they now want to start it up again. Have had a few issues with the sound system, but the owner is always willing to get thing fixed pretty quickly.

Worked a booth in a place in Chicago Heights.... had to watch wear you walked, the floor would dip down a good four inches if you put your foot in the wrong place. Now thats a fun time at 3:00 a.m. on a Saturday, while trying to mix and still check out the cute chick shaking what God gave here....lol

I do a weekly gig in Maryland at this little redneck bar … I set up on a pool table in the back … with another pool table beside me that stays open and actively used all night.

The floor is sticky from booze and puke .. .the whole place is full of smoke … and it normally smells funky.

Halfway into the night everyone is piss drunk .. dancing on the pool table ..the bar .. chairs … girls are flashing there tits … and at least one fight breaks out every time I gig.

I even had one of my speakers kicked in (the owner replaced both of them the next day)

Dam I love that place :)

HEY whats wrong with bowling alleys???? LOL. I built my booth at the lanes and it is actually ok in size. I am lazy and havent finished it completely, but it works. You are right about sound systems. It is really hard to have a decent sound system in a building with 42 lanes. That is alot of space to fill. They wont buy anything other than crap and dont listen to anyones suggestions so I say GET DRUNK and make the best of it.

I don't have any horrendous stories. The only "bad" thing that sticks out in my mind was when I went to interview for a dj gig at a local straight dance club (Breakbeats is huge here). The "interview" was for me to play a set so I did and they wanted me to make a list of every song I played. Their residents to this day still do it. I don't do lists! I was glad they didn't call me back because it would not have worked out anyway.

I've worked two strip clubs in my day (so far) One was in Toronto one was here in Edmonton.

Toronto Stip Club - Capacity 700, Kick-ass sound system, Top-rated X-rated film "actresses", Handlers, and well trained Doormen. Was paid by the Club, tips from the Showcase girls, and freelancers paid me directly to play music for them when the showcase girls weren't onstage. The Showcase Girls had Handlers to get them to the stage in costume and hand me a cd of the music. Overall a Very good gig.

Edmonton Strip Club - Capacity 275, moderate sound system, Windows media player video playback.
Shitty trained doormen (often dealing on the side for extra money)
No Real SHowcase girls, just "headline girls" from the stripper agency networks.
I had to chase the girls to the stage during club promo events, distribute fines for being late. (that made my day go like hell) Overall I had to enforce the contracts for the club to the girls.
Once in a while deal with girls Roaring high on whatever.

Got payed (little) by the club, tips from the Dancers, and when there was no Private dance room manager I did that as well, timed private dances, (walked in on 2 BJ's LOL) got paid 10 bucks per dance to be a "bouncer"

Freelance girls never went onstage unless one of the "headliners" was gone/coked out/ whatever

Not a pleasant place to work in, The Adversarial position the club put me in made it difficult to be friendly with the girls at all.

Much prefered the Toronto Club. But no matter what - Strippers especially the new ones think they are god's gift to men, Untill they get drunk/high and start crying about they're "abusive" past, presnt, or whatever.

I have never seen a profession suck the soul out of a female human being so fast in all my travels around Canada, USA, and Europe. I hate it, Hate looking at it, everything about it. Porn actresses, and strippers end up empty shells that are used up and hollow. I think I've only met one or two that were "businesswomen" that used they're amazing good looks to suck every penny they could out of the married guys in the club

I hope I never work in a strip club again.

I did the strip club thing too, 6 Years.
I got a lot of tail out of there but I can tell you that was the only good thing about the job!
The club was nice but the owners were D!(K$. The other DJ was back-stabber & a coke head.
The shift was 4pm - 2am and I adveraged $300 - $400 a night and had to take $h!t all night from the owners, who didn't know anything at all about music. one was in his 60s and the other late 40s and also a coke head.

THANK GOD I'M OUT OF THERE!
Now I make almost as much money and work half the hours at a club that treats me like gold.

I've worked at several strip clubs and in every one the people in charge were scum!

hey marcel glad to see you , i knew you would have some good info on the strip club "biz" ....

my particular club is really a dead ender .....i hope you guys can believe some of what i say about it, but if you can't i don't blame you .........

there is no music policy except the following play what each stripper (i don't call leaning against a pole dancing) wants no matter how train wreck the seques will be ........ since the owner doesn't like gangsta i don't play that and i play very little hippity hop or rap

the one "manager" (ex dancer) never watches the couch room and maintains no order because shes watching soap opera s on one of the small (not large) screens ...... there is no proper rotation, so any dancer w/ a customer in the couch room is skipped .......problem is ,if 3 of the 4 dancers are back and the 4 th just came off stage that leaves no one to dance .........so i play "break songs" or break videos...

some of the strippers have figured out ways to take advantage of this chaos , such as line up a customer for a dance then don't head back to the couch room with them until the end of the previous dancers 2nd song ........so i find myself with 0 to 20 seconds of warning to play a break song .......

all breaks are picked by me unless you're willing to tip me for it ........

i actually manage to maintain kind of a chuck music policy ........ for instance i have a total ban on busta rhymes until he does the right thing in regard to israel....... i have found that this incredible mess has actually made me better and when i'm gone sometime soon to a lot better place they are gonna need one heck of a mgr/dj to replace me cuz some hapless rookie will walk into a trap or someone experienced normally will quit ........

i work there cuz i can practically walk there and doing the doubles that i do mean i can go to one place not 3 or 4 ....... also everyone knows me from when i was a customer and then a fill in ....... i usually have 1 or 2 lady babes at any given time but it gets harder all the time to find ones that aren't dead ender druggies ......

the owner and mgmt are very unprofessional , but actually somewhat friendly and definitely not druggies ...... i get half hearted support from them .......it is what it is and i doubt if anyone could get more support than i do ...... they actually believe that what they do is how to do it.......

for what it's worth i actually have strippers and customers coming in for me and one of the mgrs prefers to be on with me so i feel like i do a good job and i even get noticed in a situation where i am surrounded by the amazingly self absorbed .........

Posté Thu 26 Apr 07 @ 2:57 pm
the other dj at my place is the one who bought the radio shack mixer .....he doesn't do any mobile or any other work and has no equipment of his own except a mic that has duct tape on the wire .........

when the current owner's father was alive they used to sponsor racing teams and support the cops and Marines ("many people spend there whole lives wondering if they made a difference; the Marines don't have that problem" Ronald Reagan ) , they had various boxing and promotions, visiting porn stars, etc

now that his daughter runs it since his passing , she has run it into the ground , to the point of losing the liquor license , the roof leaks , no security other than cameras except on weekends , no promotions , no food , and only about 30 strippers left ..... the sound system is 2 spkrs an amp and a crap behringer mixer 2 dbl cd players ..... most or all of us mobile guys have our own systems better than this

an important component of my chuck music policy is that whenever the cross dresser comes in , whoever is dancing is gonna have to like dancing to "dude looks like a lady".....lol

Dang ... and here I was WANTING to gig a strip club ... I figured dating hot stripers all the time made up for all the bad things.

Posté Fri 27 Apr 07 @ 7:16 pm
i worked a club calld the driftwood near a marine base for years and never really had any trouble at all that any of you had...everything was good the girls where nice we spent holidays together etc....i got to drink all i wanted for free and had 2 roomates who came to work with me and hung out all night...i dont really remember alot about the sound system it was decent but this has been about 10 years ago...not sure what the place is like now

Posté Fri 27 Apr 07 @ 7:46 pm
that sounds like it musta been fun .......

the babes are a very strange lot compared to the norm ......... it seems to me if you wanna see any of them that you need confidence and be anything but like the customers.......

also there are about at least 1/3 that are druggie dead enders so the possibilities are limited, i know i don't want any of that mess......

what happened to the skating rinks?? nobody spent 6 hours in a booth next to the ice ???

nobody did any "cosmic " bowling ?? lol

There was a roller rink in my Hometown - they had a DJ. I was much to young to even consider it at the time and much too old now.
