I've said this before:
It's not the music!!!
It's the stupid drunk people being allowed to get in to fights at a place,
That makes it a place people go looking to get in to fights.
If people think there might be a fight there tonight, then there probably will be.

Your club needs to setup a Strict NO TOLERANCE Rule;
That roadhouse style bouncer thing really works.
If you are rude, vulgar, aggressive, disrespectful, or have an attitude,
You will be told you have to leave.
If you put up a problem at least 3 guys twice your size will escort you directly out the front door and hand you to the Police officers out there. You also will never be allowed in the club again.
If you leave politely and your offence was just a small attitude problem than we'll probably let you in again.

Next thing is all employees should be on the look-out for people who are starting to get in each others faces or are talking aggressively towards each other, this is usually how most fights start and can be resolved buy having several bouncers closing in but not being threatening and one "the cooler" stepping in and try to calm down the situation, if it can't be resolved both parties will be asked to leave and will also be brought out to the POs outside.

Most of all ANYONE (including friends and or family of the owner or employees) involved in an actual fight, WILL be brought to the police and will be arrested for assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, destruction of property, and any and everything they can come up with.
They also will never be allowed in the club again (including friends and or family of the owner or employees). You have to stand firm on these rules and soon people will respect them.

Weed out the bad ones show the people that there will be savier consequences for their actions and they will stop fighting or they will be kicked out for good and maybe even spend the night in jail.

One more important thing is the at no time ever should a bouncer or employee assult someone.
If they do they must be fired, you DO NOT need to assult a person to stop a fight.

People who are listening to the music they like don't get in fights because they are happy and in a good mood and people who are fighting are not listening to the music they only hear their own blood boil.

Didn't you ever hear that old expression "music calms the savage beast"?

Another thing I wanted to say is that: if you are going to change the music format, don’t just do it over night, That is a club killer! You have to do it slowly over several weeks maybe even up to 2 months
This way the people who don't like the music slowly move out and it gives new people who will like your new music time to find out that things are changing and time to come in and take the place of the people who left.

Video is a vary good way to change the format, because you can now start to play more cheese and even if the people wouldn't dance to the song they can sit and laugh at the video. We use things like "Buttercup", any thing from "Grease", "Shout" from animal house and even do some video clips from other movies like John Luvits singing "Ladies Night" from the wedding singer.

Good Luck.

Personally I play popular music whatever the weather, Hip Hop is still very popular and I make it a strong part of my early evening warm-up sets, the difference is I focus on the Hits & Classics, most of the versions I have are clean, and most Popular Hip Hop (Chart, classic) doesn't insight violence unless I'm not listening properly. I'll also play select underground hits, but not of the aggressive nature.

A few years ago I hated Hip Hop and everything to do with it, I ignored it for as long as I could, but then I realised that without R'n'B/Hip Hop I'd be incapable of being any kind of commercial DJ, so I started making friends with it and realised that mixing Urban music is so fun, and also learnt to take the vocals with a pinch of salt, I laugh at a lot of them, like the video game "GTA", it's gangster culture, but much of it is parody to me.

As well as the vocals, you need to consider the vibe of the music, there is music that makes people nervy and uneasy, there are laid back grooves, up tempo party beats etc, I generally stay away from the uneasy grooves.

What makes most people aggressive is basically unhappiness mainly brought on by alcohol and to a lesser extent circumstances such as relationships/family life, finances etc, and add to that: annoying music = trouble , not Hip Hop music or Heavy metal music, but music that is not to a persons taste.

A good night is about balance and spontaneous structuring, and getting each and every song right regardless of genre but according to its popularity. For me Hip Hop stays as long as it's in the charts and/or it's being heavily requested.
