Sujet: Going from 2Gigs of Memory to 4 - Page: 1

Will going from 2 gigs to 4gigs of memory help much in my laptops performance. I'm no techie, but I want to make sure now that I'm going to be starting video mixing my system can for perform the best of its abilities. Will it help?
Here are my specs so far

Inspiron 1520, Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2.2GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache
2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

I'd say if you can, go ahead and do it. If my laptop could go to 4gigs of RAM I would do it without thinking twice. There's nothing negative about it at all.

Your specs above are very good but why not make it the best it can be.
 
Just remember: If you use a 32bit version of Windows it will be able to use a max of 3GB only.
If you want to use the full 4GB you have to use a 64bit OS which is not recommend at all for audio stuff since driver support is still bad.

Hmmm you think Vista will come up with an update to take advantage of more than 3gb? I think I'm going to bit the bullet since I have one extra slot. Pretty expensive, dell has it for $195 ouch! Need to try Ebay first
 
Can't you put 3gb in? I'm no techie either, but its obviously better than 2 and cheaper than 4. Can you mix Ram in that way?

Yeah I can, but the way I'm thinking, is I have to two slots for memory, one already has a 2gb piece, now if I can buy another 1GB memory piece, but what I'm thinking is, what if Vista release's an update to use more the 3gb, then I wont have to go through the trouble of buying memory again instead I bit the bullet up front. But I see where your coming from...it's a whole lot cheaper for 1GB- $60, than going with 2GB- $196.........AHHH crap.... you win!
 
If Vista updates and starts using that much Memory... Theres going to be a whole lot of useless computers that can't be used, baught or sold.

I did not know that. Sounds like the the extra ram may be overkill.
 
remember your computer runs as fast as the slowest component so upgrading the ram may not make much difference if there are slow drives or processors , if it aint broke don't fix it

ps video should work fine :)

Thanks buddy....Now how about if I was to get a flux capacitor?! Then I'll really be rocking!!
 
You install the Flux capacitor right next to the cooling fan. Because once you hit 88 mph the whole comp starts to heat up like you're driving through death valley

Of course you could also use the Mr. Fusion upgrade to power everything


But that's on Backorder.
 
it's my understanding if you have a dual core proccessor you will have two 1 gig sticks not a single 2 gig.

 
I have a single 2gb stick. At least that's my understanding. The specs above are directly off my PO.

If you look closely at the comp. specs it reads , 2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm, each Dimm is only 1Gig for a total of 2Gigs.

err XP pro and vista supports up to 4gig you need 64bit for 8gig
ram always helps but id say your system would run video fine apart from reports that the graphics card in the 1520 isnt so compatible with VDJ under XP, aparently vista is the go, about to order a 1520 soon aswell how have you been finding it so far (im grabbing 4gig ;)

It's working great so far! I have vista on it. I was actually messing with video mixing last night for the first time (I had the projector on the wall of my place) man it's working great! I've been really pushing the system just to try to see where it freezes, but it has not at all. I'll put one song on mix it and clone the deck right away to see if it hickups at all, but no problems at all. But I still havent messed with it with my TCV, I dont know how more pressure this puts on the CPU and program, but I'm interested to see if that messes with the stability at all, for example when I scratch. We'll see I had to send one of my TT to get repaired. Cant wait to get it back though.
