Well I picked one of these up from my local supplier yesterday, and have had a chance to have a quick play. I've not really scratched the surface of what it can do, but first impressions:

* Very well put together - the MIDI knobs feel a bit less sturdy but thats due to their clickable nature I think
* Very well laid out - all the controls are nice and chunky as well and I think the mixer has a nice clean look to it
* Great sound quality
* Evo Librarian Software lets you backup/restore all your settings
* MIDI controls - awesome - you can design your own midi layouts and switch between them with a quick button combo
* All the fader and EQ curves are configurable
* FX are also extremely configurable and can be coupled, each channel can be sent with a different level and the wet/dry fader is very handy
* Tested on a couple of firewire chipsets - Texas Instruments and Ricoh, and haven't *yet* had any problems

One thing that would be nice would be the ability to use the Librarian software to actually edit the layouts - it would be much quicker for doing the MIDI layouts IMHO.

So far overall, I'm very very impressed. Was toying between the Korg Zero 8 and this, and decided to go with the Ecler after reading up on some issues with the Korg.

Its for sure one of the mixers I'm considering buying next... This one or DJM800

Just thought I would update this for anyone who cares;

I've been using this mixer for about 3 weeks now, and am still very impressed. The range of effects are great and so customisable - I don't tend to play with effects much, but you can make these so subtle they can just add that bit extra sometimes. Plenty of other toys too, for example the microphone on channel 0 has the 3 pot EQ with configurable curves, but also has a configurable noise filter and compressor as well :)

What I've really enjoyed using is the screen though. Previously I was using RandomVideoTransition most of the time, but manually overriding as necessary. On the Ecler I can flip to my "VDJ Video" screen and either scroll through, or simply select one of my commonly used transitions from a quick button press. Much easier than messing around with a mouse or remembering keyboard shortcuts :)

I'm probably going to have to go do some work for Korg in the near future, so I might ask nicely if I can have a play on a Zero 8, would be nice to compare :)

Regards,

Scott

Thanks for the feedback...

Still one of my "might be my next mixer" thing ;)

Thanks SBDJ, for testing, and reporting to us.

I have an Acer laptop with the Ricoh Firewire chipset.

This chipset still works OK with your EVO5 ?
And: do you connect it to 4 pins (laptop) or 6 pins firewire, or are both OK ?

Thanks again.

Yup, I use it with the Ricoh chipset three nights a week at the moment... I'm using 4 pin to 6 pin without any problems as obviously the mixer is externally powered.

Scott

Two thumbs up for Ecler. Been using their Nuo for over 2 years now and it's the best mixer I've ever had out of a gazillion. I wouldn't pay the price for a Pioneer when Ecler gives you the same for way less. No reliability problems either.

Norway> You need to make it happen. The EVO 5 is great peice of hardware, and ECLER has been doing great job of firmware and adding new effects. When your serious let me know, PM I can get u a good deal but in US dollars, (which right now I think benefits everyone except here in the US) Our economy is going to shit.

Got my TCV on Saturday, enabled Timecode (using 2 channels of the Ecler in TS mode - simply by selecting a new MIDI overlay), hit AutoConfig and off I went. Very impressed, no TC issues at all as yet :)

SBDJ> are you using channels 1&2 for timecode? I use 1 & 4 I like to space it out, you can do this by changing the registry in virtual dj.

I'm using 1 and 2, it's actually how I prefer it but thanks anyway :)

How do you actually benefit of the mixer screen? Can you display any VDJ information here? Can mixer read the bpm from the software or can you easily adjust it to right. BPM is important for the effects I think...

At present VDJ provides no midi output for an Ecler Evo 5. The BPM counter is very good though, is a live counter, and has a "confidence" display as well to let you know how accurate it thinks it is.

The main benefit of the screen is to set up effects and their parameters, and more importantly for me the MIDI controls. You can use the screen to select a display overlay that will allow you to configure all the MIDI buttons, along with some generic mixer parameters like switching from audio to traktor scratch mode (for use with VDJ TCV/TCCD). These settings can all be saved, and switched between easily.
