Sujet: alienware area 51 or shuttle xpc

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

In 7 weeks time i will be back in the uk and i am planning on rebuilding my complete djing setup.
I currently use an acer travelmate 4000 with herc mk1 and the vdj software that came with it.
Now i am going to upgrade to a pro version so i can get into the video mixing side of things.

Now because i do a lot of flying around the middle east i need to keep weight to a minimum this is why i would like know what you guys think about the following pieces of kit.

The alienware area 51 laptop (can it handle video mixing)

or

A shuttle system (what would be the best specs)

Also planning on getting the numark dmc2

Thankyou in advance for your advice

dont buy alienware its just a Dell with a different case and they dont have a very good build

as they use the cheapest parts possible

the perfect spec to look for is

2 GB Ram
2 ghz or greater , Dual Core
512 Dedicated Video

thanks simon

a shuttle its going to be

You can get much better laptops than the Alienware for much less. I've seen laptops that would handle Video perfectly for about 1000 pounds.

DON'T GET A LAPTOP!!

DONT GET A DELL, Well some users have success with them so I cant totally dog them, but the shuttle is the way you wanna go ORRR you can build a rackmount pc which could be even better for a dj.

Ultimately it depends on what you need it for, for me a laptop is a big enough pain in some settings, I wouldn't want to carry a monitor in a club, that wouldn't be practical at all. Video enabled (gaming) laptops are becoming very common and affordable now.

More than likely its going to be a shuttle.
I still have to carry my laptop with me for a couple of reasons.
Just a bit worried about carring both the laptop and shuttle as carry on baggage on the plane.
There is not a cat in hell's chance of me put either one of them in the hold ive seen how the baggage handlers at Manchester and Dubai airports work (anyone want to play catch).
On the monitor side i plan to buy one when i get back to Dubai they are a lot cheaper there (no vat) and i have a flight case that a 17" flatscreen will fit into.

Lucky you going to Dubai, I've fancied going there for ages, beautiful place.

Whatever your situation, a laptop is a lot more viable to transport, especially through airports, as it's a common item to carry, they know the drill and it's allowed in your hand luggage, a shuttle will probably be something that will require scanning through the "special items" detector. I traveled through many airports with my Laptop, Herc MK2 and 3 channel club mixer, they were fine with the laptop, fine with the Herc after they'd thrown it around a bit, but the mixer was something they was very suspicious about, it makes you feel like a criminal at times, now I don't take any DJ stuff when flying.

As far as what you buy is concerned, it all depends on what kind of performance you need versus how much your willing to spend (and of course consider the transporting factor), whilst a shuttle would offer more power for the price, you shouldn't accept that a laptop isn't capable of handling video, because many can and can very well, I wont name drop but there are a few world famous acts using VDJ for Video and with laptops, if it's good enough for these guys playing in gigantic stadiums then it's good enough for me (playing in super clubs and bars), that means they are probably good enough for you..

so don't listen to the rumors, the fact is both a laptop and a shuttle can potentially run Video mixing with ease, just look at the specs and be sure to post the details of the model your considering before purchasing, chances are there will be someone credible on hand to tell you their experiences with that model and whether the specs are up to the job.

Hey Bagpuss,

what laptops are these? I'm busting my nut at the moment trying to work out what to do about my system.

not sure if this one is good for video but seems might work well and just over a grand. i am thinking of building a shuttle myself. i use TCV and already have my edirol soundcard and will probally buy a video card but need a good solution for an AMD micro atx motherboard any suggestions?

@Andy, There's a good magazine called "What laptop" they review the latest and greatest laptops and do different group tests, you want to look at "gaming laptops", in this group you have laptops with 256mb-512mb dedicated Video memory, 1-2gb Ram, dual core etc, you'll find a few models offering these kind of specs for around 1000 (sometimes less).

thanks for the info Bagpuss, will check it out in a couple of months when I come to seriously looking.

This video card should work well with VDJ. If there were to be problems with XP I have been told that the 7600 GO cards work well with Vista. Is there a way they will build this computer with just a fresh copy of Vista or XP and not all the other loaded bullshit that these companies load onto them?? You want a clean install of the OS for VDJ.

If you have the budget go all the way, this laptop is a dream!!
Will work with audio and video perfect!

i use shuttle since 6 years & so far no problems!
But my next system i will put in server rack chasis

I think you can try to use the Dell Alienware Area 51.

That was 8 years ago, I think he has made a decision by now.
