Hi Guys,
OK so I have a Total Control, about 3 weeks ago during a gig a guest at the party managed to spill quite a bit of beer all over my mixer! I did the 'best thing' and leave the unit upside down for 3 days!
Angry is quite the understatement!
OK now over the last few weeks, the knobs and faders are starting to get a little sticky, and some buttons are doing 'the wrong thing' (loop out buttons shortening the loop rather than exiting out of the loop!
The unit is still in perfect work order, except for the 'stickiness' !!
The unit is out of warranty (even though this would have voided the warranty no doubt), so I'm prepared to crack her open, armed with a brand new can of NF contact cleaner. If it all goes pear shaped I will purchase a new unit, and I can borrow a replacement TC from a friend in the meantime. So I feel like I've got nothing to loose.
Has anyone got any good advice regarding opening and cleaning the Total Control... in particular anyone who has taken apart one of these units before?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
DJ Auz

I dont have one but I'm guessing its pretty standard for a spill. Take the board/s out and remove any battery that might be soldered onto the board. Fill up a sink with hot soapy water and give it a good scrub with a softish brush being careful not to damage anything, turning all the knobs, etc. You need to get all the beer out or it will corrode the tracks and components later. THOROUGHLY rinse it off and leave it somewhere to dry COMPLETELY - like in a hot water cupboard for a few days. Get some switch (potentiometer) lubricant spray and give a quick spray into all the pots and turn them back and forth to distribute the lubricant. Reassemble the unit and test. Then go and buy a new one because its toast ;)

PCB cleaner should do the trick, but as mentioned you will have to take the thing apart to do a thorough job

I would recommend you contact your Numark distributor to see if they are in a position to fix it.

A liitle too late but does your gig contracts have a clause stating that the signee is responsible for any damage caused to you or your equipment during the period of your event? I have it and only had to use it once, thank God... It's also good to have floating insurance when you go out. I did a B-day party once and a really good karaoke singer went to town on his song and smashed my Shure wireless to the ground at the end of his performance. I wasn't a happy camper but the show must go on. I called the contract signee the next day and gave him the cost to replace the mike and he took care of it immedietely... no questions asked

Thanks all for your advice, it's really helpful. I'll let you all know how I get on!
Yes normally I do, and I normally position my equipment/lighting stands so that it's hard for people to even get close to the desk! This gig however was a promotional gig at a friends place, so it was free! So no contracts were signed!! To make it worse it was a friend of mine who spilt the bloody drink! And slightly in his defense it wasn't completely his fauly, nor was he drunk!
I want bent down to adjust sound sound levels on the switch, and as I did that this guy lent over to read the laptop screen (I was already having a conversation with the guy!) As I got up, with the bottle of beer right above my head, I knocked it clean out of his hand!
Very very very annoying!!!

I know I had used rubbing alcohol in the past to clean up electronics.
