I just bought a 2TB drive for my music videos, and I still have about 900GB available. I'd like to consolidate my hard drives and was wondering if its wise to have my videos, karaoke files, and mps on the same 2TB hard dive.
1.1 TB of video
300 GB Mp3
80BG Karaoke
=approx 1.5TB
approx .5 TB remaining.
It's not necessary to have the karaoke on there, more important to haave the videos and MP3s.
It goes without saying that I will have backups of each type of format with me when I work, but I'm just talking about stability and effectiveness.
I'm trying to make things more compact andd am curious what you all think.
Thank you.
FYI, I'm running a high powered dell xps 1730, if that makes any difference.

I use a 1.5TB external drive for Karaoke, Videos and Music. I tend to keep the newer mp3's on my internal, but backed up on a separate drive, just in case the HD crashes (I figure at the very least I can DJ mp3's in case of a massive crash of the external). I have a buddy who did the same thing but here's where we differ.
I created partitions within the 1.5TB, one for music, one for video and one for karaoke. He didn't. I'm not sure how it affects the search/load time having everything basically on one drive; or for that matter, if i set things up wrong. I was using 3 different HDs before and consolidating those 3 to one drive certainly makes setup quicker and I feel that I'm not eating up system power/resourses with 3 externals all being powered by the USB root hubs (the 1.5 is powered by a separate power supply, and I assume your HD is the same. I haven't had any problems *KNOCKS ON WOOD* so far; and considering I went from 4 usb ports to 3 with my new laptop, consolidating was the best thing I could have done. Hope this helps and everything works out for you.

got all that i need on one drive, three folders, one marked music dump mixture of mp3's and video (about 8,000 files) used for my main source throughout the night, 2nd one marked mp3's used soley for those hardly ever asked for tunes (nearly 22,000 files) and finally the karaoke folder (7,500 files) never have any problems with them been on one drive but obviously no where near what you guys have stored, but being on this side of the pond don't need such a diverse catalogue of music as what you do in the states.
but lets face it you must be carrying an awful lot of crap that you can clear off those drives, whether it be doubles of a file or just dead music or fillers when you first started compiling your music, i know i do a clear out of the stuff every three month or so of music i know i will never play again.

You're right Tayla, although I have gotten rid of most of my doubles, there is quite a bit of of tracks that I have never, and probably will never, play. That being said, I heavily circulate though private functions and nightclubs, so my collection is extremely expansive. I like to be prepared....but I see where you are going with that. Thanks

Great response. I too went from 6! USB porst to 4. after you plug in your soundcard, midi controller, MP3 drive, and video drive, there is no space for the the karaoke drive, a jump drive, or anything else that may come my way. And yes, my 2TB is powered by AC, so I am no longer utilizing USB bus power and can save that for other peripherals like a mouse, cooling place, etc. Seeing as how HDDs are getting smaller and more compact, the 2TB drive is not THAT much more cumbersome than the portable USB powered drives. Amazing isn't it, to think that 1 year ago i bought a 1 TB that is about the size of half a shoe box and it cost $400. such is the way of technology!
Thanks for your responses, you have led me in a direction to make a decision.
PS, anyone out there with any more comments, feel free to stop by. I'd be interested to know if anyone has had any bad experiences as a direct result from this type of configuration.
Again, thank you for your responses.

The only concern I would have is the issue of backing up your files. Are you going to have a second 2TB drive to back up to? I know you have said that you will bring backups with you.
And remember that the bigger the drive the longer it will take to back up. Especialy if its USB.
Search times can also be longer with the larger drive size so a good clean layout with frequent defrag is possibly more important from a stability/load time point of view.

It doesn't matter what you have on the drive as long as there areno viruses and such. The program will only access what it needs and all the other files are ignored.
I have a 2 tb drive with mpg2, mp4 video, mp3 audio, program backups, jpgs for slideshows, text2d text files, avi clips....it's all good. Like they say though, keep it clean, keep it backed up, keep it backed up, keep it backed up (you can never stress that enough) and most importanly make sure you don't mix-up your pornos with your clip-bank clips!

Tayla,
I know, I have that daunting task ahead of me as far as "cleaning up" the drives of doubles and stuff. When I bought the new laptop I used it as an opportunity to clean up the mp3's. The videos were pretty straight forward - not alot of repeats there. The challenge is the karaoke, but I'll do that at my leisure...Way too many tunes to think I can do it in a weekend :)
Dazmax,
All of the files that are on my gig HD are backed up on other hd's, as well as cd's. I learned the hard way to keep my current hits and some classics on my internal - had a chip fry on an external waaaay back in the day and had nearly no music on my internal - S-T-R-E-S-S-F-U-L!
djkizzle, anytime man! I have to agree with Tayla, Dazmax and dj-e-lectric...backup, backup, backup! And defrag often...good luck!
