What VDJ version do you use?
VDJ Config - Info
Also it would be great to know what kind of Mic and quipment in general you use for broadcast.
Mixer, Soundcard etc.

Normaly it is enough to setup the config like that!
Input - Microphone
Output - Single (because you are using only the Mac built-in soundcard.
Soundcard - Simple
Never used it like that, but try it!

I applied the it how you said to, all good, apart from i cant hear myself. I've tried the mic on the mac and a bluetooth one.

However, if i choose advanced config, i select the master, and a microphone. By doing this, i can hear myself but there is an awful high pitched sound and it interrupts my voice.

that sounds like feedback squeal to me from your mic and speaker being in close proximity.. try putting some headphones on whilst broadcasting and see if the squeal dissapears ..
good luck
