I have been tinkering with Virtual DJ Home (the Free edition) for a really long time, and recently I decided to try the VirtualDJ LE that came with my Numark Mixtrack Pro, since I have never liked Traktor or Serato as much as I liked VirtualDJ. However, while trying to see what new changes the LE version had, I noticed I was unable to open the program without a controller plugged in.
Is this normal? If so, any legitimate reasons why? I've DJ'd some of my favorite gigs with no controller... makes it very simple and easy to get involved with your audience, rather than "seratofacing". Not to mention, the ability to just mess around when you don't have your controller with you...

Yes, it is normal .... LE versions will only start when the controller is connected as it's given away "free" with that product.
The home free version can be used with just a keyboard and mouse, but won't work for more than 10 minutes with a controller.
Different versions for different market segments.

Kradcliffe is correct but that doesn't mean you can't have both versions installed on your computer in different folders. You will just need to make sure that when you open the program you choose the right version based on if you will be using a controller that session or not.
Other option is to upgrade to Pro, since you have LE you get a discount and with pro you can change what controller you use if any at all each time you open the program or even in the middle of a set. There several other advantages to Pro such as ability to use timecodes and access to all kinds of cool skins and add-ons.

You can't eun Virtual DJ Le when the control is not connected!
You have to buy VDJ Pro 7 to do that or Download for free VDJ Home

This post is over a year old, but VirtualDJ LE v7.x can be used without the controller connected because with v7 we released Home FREE: http://www.virtualdj.com/download/free.html
However, controllers that come with VirtualDJ LE v6.x, v5.x or earlier cannot be used without the controller connected.
For unlimited use, upgrading from VirtualDJ LE to the full VirtualDJ Professional at a discount is recommended: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html
To see a list of the differences between LE and Pro, please see http://www.virtualdj.com/products/comparison.html
