even when the pitch is just a couple of BPM away from zero
i can hear a significant reduction in the sound quality
the sound is kind of "warbly"
even a friend of mine who would not normally notice these sort of things noticed it
is there a way to fix this?

Change in BPM isn't the variable you mean, how much does it work out in pitch%? I notice at about 4%, Check if is Master tempo is on advanced config>performance>Master tempo

Best results can be achieved with Master tempo Engine set to Advanced (Config->Performance tab)
