Forum: VirtualDJ 8.1 Technical Support

Sujet 7, 8 or 10 (Windows)?

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Hi DJs.

I'm just about to make the move over to VDJ and was even just about to go and get a new laptop when I read a comment in the forum somewhere about one of the Windows editions. It was an old issue, I think but it got me thinking; I can choose which O/S I want so is there one that most DJs out there get on well with? I was leaning toward the 64 Bit Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. As for Windows 10, maybe that is a bit new still, I've not heard anything good about DJing on it but maybe you guys know different? Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.

If you have the choice then Windows 7 ultimate 64bit is solid as a rock.

My gig machine is running Windows 8.1 with Start8 and it's also given me no problems whatsoever.

Can't vouch for Win 10 but with all the snooping and the fact you can't turn off auto updates (except on the enterprise version) it's best avoided.

Thanks kradcliffe, just the sort of answer I needed.

There's no reason to bash Windows 10.
I respect each one preferences, but Windows 10 is working perfect for me on all my 5 systems. I even bootcamped my MacBook Air with them and they work flawless

So you are happy for MS to force install an update that could screw up your DJ system (like what happened with the previous graphics BSOD issue)

Sorry, I'm not willing to take that chance.

Also bear in mind Windows 10 is a permanent beta and MS can and will add or in fact remove features as they see fit. I'm not happy with that.

Here's my feedback to help you out. Started out DJ'ing about year and a half ago with following specs:

OLD DJ LAPTOP/GEAR:
Make/model: Asus X401A
Processor: Intel Pentium dual-core 2.4 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 320 GB
VirtualDJ: v7.4.x, then upgraded to v8.0.x
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (later upgraded to Windows 10 Home)
Controllers: Numark Mixtrack Pro, Numark N4

Earlier this year I decided to start adding music videos and other graphic visuals to my DJ sets so I bought brand new laptop during a big box electronics store sale.

CURRENT DJ LAPTOP:
Make/model: HP Pavilion 17-g119dx
Processor: Intel Core i5 quad-core 1.7 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
HDD: 1 TB
VirtualDJ: v8.1.2857
OS: Windows 10 Home
Controllers: Gemini G4V, Numark N4

I haven't had ANY problems DJ'ing with Windows 7 or Windows 10 during my gigs and I'm usually on from 3 - 5 hours a set weekly. I can't speak on Windows 8 because we never upgraded to that in the enterprise where I work full time and I didn't have it on my home systems. VirtualDJ plays nicely with a lot of equipment so I think it's just a matter of you optimizing whatever OS you go with as long as you meet minimum specs. Start with the optimization guide at the following link: http://virtualdj.com/wiki/PC%20Optimize.html

Concerning the matter of the Windows 10 updates, that service can be turned off even in the home edition if you know where to look. If going with Windows 10, I don't recommend leaving the Windows update service turned on unless an update is going to fix a problem you're having or is adding a feature that you want. Hope this info helps!

I'm happy with an OS that's proved itself extremely stable, and performing better on the same spec PC than it's predecessor.
I'm happy with an OS that I don't need to do several tweaks in order to work properly with SSD drives.
I'm happy with an OS that's the best between two different "worlds", those of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

As for the updates:
It also happens to be the administrator of a business lab that consists of 60 terminal PC's (50 of them with Windows 7 Professional and 10 with Windows 10 Pro) and 2 Windows 2013 Servers.
I always make sure those terminals get their Windows Updates. If an update brakes something then I can always uninstall that particular update and that hasn't changed on Windows 10.
Also I like the fact that I can postpone / reschedule the Windows Update procedure even for days, where in Windows 7 you were only given a 4 hour grace or in Windows 8 the ridiculous amount of 15 minutes grace.

PS: YES, I advise all users to install all critical updates for their OS. I always did and I never regret it. The last 10 years that I manage the lab I mention only once I had an issue with automatic updates on a PC and it was my last Windows XP PC BTW.

PS2: Regarding the windows 10 update and the BSOD:
Sh*t can happen for any reason. That's why you always carry a backup. And that's why you test everything before hand. I have 2 identical systems. One of them is the test/backup machine. Anything I do (e.g. new device with new drivers, or drivers update e.t.c.) is tested there. If the tests pass (meaning I use it live sucessfully for at least 2 gigs) then it goes to main system as well.
For those who can't afford a solution like this I understand that it's not convenient to say "sh*t happens". However the same situation could be caused by a graphics drivers update, a sound drivers update, a new software installed, or even a vulnerability that has been fixed on one of those updates that you didn't install

Thanks for the posts. I was under the impression that you could only delay the updates in 10 not stop them but to be honest I have not looked into it as much as I should.

Another way round the updates I guess is to get it all running stable and then don't let the thing anywhere near the internet. The only problem with this is if you don!t have dedicated machines you do need those updates.

Hello

I have been using Virtual DJ since the days of XP and its been quite solid. With the introduction of Windows 7, 8 different Mac OS and now Windows 10 whats necessary is
1- for a Windows laptop my preference would be 7 Professional 64, and Windows 10 pro 64 , however the software is just one aspect. The hardware as well would need to have plenty of RAM 8 at least, best 16 GB and if possible have a Solid State Drive SSD. That will improve your performance a lot and reduce latency

2- on a Mac Yosemite and Mountain Lion are working fine (haven't tested on El Capitan) and again the MacBook Pro should have 8 GB of ram and SSD
