Hi, I use virtual DJ 7 mostly, and attempt at times to use virtualdj 8. But I have questions and maybe you have answers.
some things bother me about vdj8 and I can't seem to find out where they are originating:
—the gain bumps up automatically on many tracks and it sounds as if there is a compressor or limiter on the audio?
it almost sounds clipped. Why does this happen? I don't notice it so much on vdj7 although the automatic gain adjust is there, which is helpful, don't get me wrong.
IS there actually a compressor built into VDJ that one can adjust and/or turn off?
—this is a problem I have with vdj7 and vdj8. Why is that so many straightforward 4/4 tracks get automatically BPM detected as having the "1" in the wrong place? Why isn't the "1" by definition placed in the beginning of the track?

There is a limiter in v8, it can not be turned off, nor should it be turned off even if you could, turn the gain down on your tracks.
Beat detection is still being improved, not all tracks start at beat 1 many have short intros therefore it has to be detected and not just assumed.
You can correct this with editing the grid, via the poi editor, the tap button or the pad page grid adjust.

I guess i just think it is strange because for instance most deep dubstep or minimal DNB cuts meant for being dj'ed basically start on 1 but have a long atmospheric intro. But it's like 64 measures exactly, of 4/4 before the beat drops. So the program ought to assume the beginning of the song is beat 1. Yet it always chooses 4. It's just an odd thing to have to go back and re-edit each track so i can make things sync up right.

about the gain and limiter: the gain gets automatically turned up when I load a track, i suppose based on the analysis of the waveform. But it would be nice to just have the gain stay at one spot as I'm adding tracks.

it will stay put after they are analyzed if you think the gain is too high you can adjust for all track by changing the zerodb setting i recommend -3 also autogain set to auto

Sync only needs the grid to be on beat not on phrase,
4 'taps' on beat on phrase will correct this [off phrase], how vdj works out the first beat is a mystery [or at least not common knowledge] but as I said it's being worked on, recent updates have improved the first beat detection.
