Hi fellow DJs
Ever since i started as amateur dj last year i've been buying and classifying more and more music
EDM, techno, house, pop, dance, progressive house, techno pop, deep house, trance, electronic, disco, 80s, latin,..
dont know where to look !
I have lots of old files,
how to classify a file if the label says "techno pop", pop ? or techno ? is a song more techno than pop ? the opposite ?
first of all, I've come to the idea that anything that we hear on popular radio is "pop"
but what if it's a very known EDM artist or song ? should i name it EDM ? techno-pop ? only pop even though its EDM ?
is calvin harris or martin garrix more pop than techno ?!
i mean, "disco" and "80s", there is a big difference, but
dance music and house music? there are so many songs out there that sound the same but different genre...
what would be a good start to classify all my music files ?
are there any good sites that help you classify them or learn the "key" difference between two songs ?
of course, deep house and house tracks have a better mix result than a "house and techno" tracks mix..
on the other hand i dont want to set too much music genres so i can amplify the possibilities of mix (almost crossover style)
like mixing a David Guetta track with another EDM artist song that we don't hear much on the radio
Thanks for your help !

Well, how important is this to you? It actually does not matter what someone else calls it, but how it sounds to me. The only genres that I label are the music that is in a different language. I label my Latin music, because I'm not Latin and don't know what most of the music is. It's not like I'm listening to Latin music for pleasure, It's my job. So reggaeton, Salsa, Cumbia, etc. I have Russian, Arabic, Romanian, Indian and so forth. The other stuff I know, and do not label.
I guess since you are just getting started, you may see the need. But then again, you should decide how you categorize your music. Virtual DJ makes it easy by allowing you to group a large amount of music together, and naming the genre for all of them at the same time.
I don't allow request for a specific genre, because that could mean anything to them, and something entirely different to me. You can't even ask me for an artist, I want to know exactly what you want. I believe you should know what your favorite song is, I don't have time to be a mind reader.
My PrimeCuts come with the genres in the tag, as do some of my videos. So you may want to get your music from a company that does give this info.

Ok, Thanks :)
The thing is that i converted a lot of files to FLAK or oposite (mp3)
that info is then gone. then again, the song info inside the label does not correspond to info on the net, and i also notice the difference a bit..
i usually do mixes and give them names like "top techno" "best pop" "house mix", thats when i dont do crossovers.
so i dont want to mistake a song genre and mix it with the others making it the "intruder"...:)

Anything from techno, still techno, the same for the other genres and sub.
anything called pop (pop techno, pop house, pop dance) is popular music radio broadcast,
i consider other stuff than radio broadcast more underground, even if the artist is well known.
For me, pop is not a style, its a notoriety given to a song because it plays non stop on radio.

For me if its good music, then I call it good music.
Like you said theres way to many labels out, it'll drive you insane.
Forget about unless you need them for tags, other then that I don't worry about them.

You can name various genres in the genre field and have them show up in different lists using the Library plugin. ;-)
For example a song with genres; Pop Rock
would show up in Pop lists
and would also show up in Rock lists.
