I don't know too much about the light source for a projector, but I do know only a lamp has been bright enough in the past. It is obvious that this is close to changing, Indeed it already may have. So looking at the newspapers I found this ad from Sony (a main brand!).

Lamps generate too much heat, and are too unreliable.
Replacement lamps are expensive.
Lamps are on the way out..but when?
