Just to make it a little clearer..when using the Xvid codec the audio bitrate that you set is what you get!

Xvid is a video codec, it has nothing to do with audio.
It depends on the settings in the program used to encode what audio bitrate will be used.
Edit: I also have no idea what you mean by the bitrate being limited.
In Handbrake the Audio tab offers a bitrate drop-down, which is respected, at least in my tests.

Ron did you give the preset I offered a try?
Also put some faith in you ears and don't worry so much about what it looks like in spek.... We listen to music not view it

If audio quality is your main concern, wouldn't the best setting for Handbrake simply be "Auto Passthru"
That way you simply get the original audio from the source, which will probably already be a lossy compressed source anyway.
I don't really see the point in using aac at 512kbps as in your preset wickedmix. At that bitrate flac lossless would probably be better, but if your source is a lower bitrate anyway just keeping the original without re-encoding would seem like the best option.

This is a little academic since before long we will just use the vob!

DVD's contain ac3 audio (I think typically 192kbps 2-channels) so that should work fine in an mp4 container.
Note that h264 (and soon h265) offers the most reliable support for hardware-accelerated decoding, so in that respect it is probably preferred to use over vob, as mpeg is not decoded using hardware acceleration in virtualdj.

Adion how do you check your audio quality?
I place great faith in an audio spectrum (and my ears, and the ears of a teenager!). I've examined thousands of songs. I do comparison checks with the different codec output and the source material. My eyes are now well tuned.

VirtualDJ Tag Editor shows the bitrate for the audio stream.
I don't have any reason to distrust the aac encoder used by Handbrake (and looking it up, it appears to be fdk-aac, a library which is second place on the recommended aac encoders by hydrogenaud.io, a website filled with people doing proper comparisons between codecs)

Just took a single vob and using Handbrake set to default mp4 with 320kb/s audio and got a mp4 file with a spectrum I would expect.
Odd.
I normally change the constant quality to average bitrate 3000kb/s and single pass.
I'll try again.
Hm it's fine again.
The laptop is not on the internet at the moment but that should not affect anything.
What would you recommend for a constant quality setting..the default 23 ?

Beatbreaker are you happy with 160kb/s acc audio?
I'm inclined to go to 256kb/s but I'm a newbie to this sort of stuff.
I have got inferior spectrum's from both WinFF and Handbrake over the last few days.
I can't see how I made a mistake..it's too easy.

Yeah that's an old preset I had on my phone, I've since changed it.
But it does depend on my source.
For iTunes video I usually have to go back change out the audio because iTunes does send out some pretty shitty stuff, lol!

Adion are you saying that mp4 video will be better than a vob with things such as a man moving quickly, as opposed to standing still when they are both equal?
I think you are, but I want to make it clear.

Handbrake has again produced 160kb/s aac audio when set for 320kb/s. It did claim that output but the spectrum was one of a low quality file.
I still don't trust Handbrake.

I would recommend constant quality indeed, because it's quality that you probably care about.
Simply give it a try on a few videos and see if you like the results, or if a higher quality setting gives you noticeably better quality with acceptable additional filesize.
Note that with aac the quality you set is also average bit-rate.
If your source contains a lot of silence or little high frequencies, it may still decide that to achieve the same quality less bits are required.
For vdj h264/h265 are indeed more efficient than vob/mpg.

Avanti which is a free front end for ffmpeg was my final adopted software. I used an older release which corresponded to my operating system. The video codec used was h264 and the audio aac at 256 kb/s. This software easily dealt with the batch files created by other software. The resultant mp4 video was excellent.
Winff was just a little on the crude side. Note it's also a free front end for ffmpeg.
I don't trust Handbrake. If you use this it might automatically drop the audio quality down to that of YouTube. That is even when you have specified high quality.
