Looking at the default mapping for the nanopad2 it looks like it simply has 4x the 16 pads (and the x/y things), but not the 6 buttons at the top
So it looks like maybe these buttons aren't sent as midi, but instead changes the midi sent by the 16 pads
In that case I guess I can't map the 16 pads to be the 16 pads in VDJ, and then use the top buttons to change pad pages
Is that correct?

You are correct, the extra buttons are hardware (dont send any MIDI), so not the ideal controller to use for Pad pages
