Here are a couple of issues I'd like to gather comments about:
1) Stage Monitors
Long ago I decided that stage monitors were an extra source of complications which may not be suitable for most karaoke singers?
Last weekend I had a lot of undergraduate students of music from a local University with their tutor. The Saturday went well without a stage monitor, however on the Sunday the tutor wanted to showcase the students using my pa and brought in a small 8" (50w?) active monitor. This appeared to work for their show which lasted approximately one hour. The instruments used were a bass guitar, acoustic guitar, tambourine, and of course vocals. However the tutor returned a little later to do a spot..which she did very well the previous day, except this time I hit severe feedback. Now I don't mind stopping everything and hence find the solution, except she became impatient, and left. You must remember that I had bands on my left and right, and the main stage directly ahead which later that night featured a well known super group. There was a lot of background noise!! Anyway I was saved by a robust chap with a simple guitar..I offered him a vocal mic and mic'ed his guitar. He was brilliant..and the tutor stop in her tracks to look. I needed to maximize their volume to compete with the bands.
The problem..I did not know where to connect the stage monitor on my PV10 mixer..cough. I used the headphone jack. I should have used mon send. --- removed --. Also I might have left a radio mic on..I just don't know..this all happen in the space of two minutes. I'll point out that the problem seemed to stem from her stage monitor but I never got enough time to isolate the issue.
2) Song key changing was something I avoided for many years on basis it was an added complication and was unlikely to help a newbie singer. However singers nowadays are much more sophisticated and I love, and use the VDJ8.2 built in key changer.
Comments on both these issues would be appreciated.
I think there is much to be learned and karaoke hosts should not assume that karaoke will be the extent of the demands made upon them. The support of a group may on occasion be expected.
