So I just bought a powerhouse laptop (WOOHOO!)(dual core 2ghz, 2G ram, 256 ATI x4000, SBLive!) but i have far more music than it will hold..
obviously i'll be getting an external hard drive....
My question is that i am going to be using primarily my hercules mk2 (USB device)
If i purchase a USB external hard drive, will this hinder performance of either very much? USB hard drives are cheaper than firewires- which would be my alternative if it's a bad idea to run both devices through the USB bus.

If you can buy firewire do it as in general users have some problems with the USB (sound card +hard disc) and we advise them to buy a usb hub with power supply

Hi there!
Just remember that USB 2.0 is the fastest connection you can use... if you can combine a 7.500rpm or 10.000RPM hdd...great!
Good luck!

Theory shows that USB2 is faster than firewire.
But when doing some important tests Firewire is faster.

max speed of USB is 480 Mbps, and FireWire is 400 Mbps.
"USB 2.0 - 480 Mbps
FireWire 1394 - 400 Mbps"

Yes but i think it's the buffer size that is smaller for FireWire and it make the transfer rate more important for FireWire.
You will never get 480Mbps with USB2 but something like 350-400. And i think you get 380 with FireWire.
