As the title states:
Running VDJ 4 on 512 Ram - Would adding 1 gig of Ram to my laptop make a big difference to preformance?
I am not having problems at the moment, but video is a bit jumpy at times even with settings set on medium.
(Dell Inspirion 5150/128mb shared graphics/512mb RAM/3.6Ghz P4/80 gig HD).

no it would not make a difference..... but a HUGE difference ;) hehe
RAM means ALOT to any software, and 512 is the minimum I would recommend.
You will have pretty big performance upgrade with twice that ram ;)

Flip you running win XP on 512mb? Shame, you must wake up and smell the speed of 1 gig :D
In my opinion, MINIMAL ram is 1 gig now days, unless you running some other OS
Are you adding 1 gig like the title says or another 512 to make it 1 gig? 1 gig just for vdj is more than enough

For audio 1Gb is enough (even 512Mb, if you tweak your Xp), but for video 1,5Gb or 2Gb are recommended especially as your laptop has Video card that takes your ram (up to 128Mb) when you use video. It would be nicer that you have video card with it's own memory (ddr3), as it is faster that way.

You can get many laptops which have dedicated graphics, in which case the same 1 gig will do fine. Video memory or type isnt an issue really, as you dont get new cards with less than 128mb dedicated anyway, which is more than enough.
I crank videos on my 3.2 system, 128mb video card with old school ddr1. So dont worry bout gfx, just get 1 gig ram :D

Thanks for the info... i will be getting 1 gig and taking out one of the 256mb Rams so that i will be left with one 256mb and after placing in the 1 gig, I will have 1.25 gig running on XP.
Hopefully this will increase all round preformance! :)

Check that strip of 256 though, if it's a bit old and slow, it may be doing more harm than good leaving it in, as a group of ram chips will only operate as fast as the slowest one...

how would i check it?

Search google for a program called CPU-Z
And some ram configurations are unstable. The most stable ones are those wich are double factors, ie 256 x 2 = and 512 x 2 = 1024 ect. Just make sure it runs ok on 1.25 gigs

Couldn't believe the difference when I put in my extra 1MB .

Before I got my laptop I was running on aq 512 Sony desktop. Now I've got my dell inspiron with 1 gb of RAM & itr does make a huge differance. Much More stable, which means more possibilities. To put it simply, there is no such thing as too much RAM;^]

well, to be technical, over 2 gigs is just starting to waste the memory, well for now at least. We all know the ram vs years graph

I have a Dell GX280 Hyper Threaded P4 2.83GHz and 1 GB of ram. I also have a Dell 4800 P4 2.6GHz with a gig of ram. On either system, I've yet to see the ram go beyond 350MB.
The processor on the other hand peaks @ 100% often enough. Especially when loading a song to a deck or analyzing.
Will VDJ make use of HT or Pentium D's?
