Here is a little thing - it may be by design though
I often use the Pre-listen function on new tracks to see if the BPM has been analyzed to double or half the correct BPM (IMO)
If so I open the BPM editor and half/double it. While I do that the track will then visible also be playing in the bpm editor waveform
When I then close the BPM editor, it shuts off the pre-listen function as well
Is that on purpose?

The editors share the pre-listen for preview yes. They will pick up if the song was already playing as you noticed, but they don't remember if the song was playing just for the editor or prior to that.

You could generate two custom buttons to half and double it. Then you do not need to open the editor.
