Been doing my vids at MPG2 for years and am now wondering if there is anything i should know? Im a bit in the dark I've not looked into it in a while just been in a routine re ripping.

Not looking for the best as it uses to much space but is there something thats better quaility that uses the same or less space now? All answers I look forward to viewing as always.

vobs seems the way people are going charlie, but the price of hardrives nowadays doesn't seem much point on trying to save on file size
 
I have been examining mkv and mp4 formats that are pretty good
It has been recommended to use mp4 formats if i decided to convert
have not decided as yet

Seems however that most recommend that I stick to VOBs (mpeg2 format) and just upgrade to a larger drive
currently i have two 500 GBs all filled.

So let's say.... 750Gb to a terabyte should do it for me.. two terabytes actually.. I hear there are even larger

Of course converting makes extra space.. but the need to read over bpm and set cues etc.
 
i just grown to 2x1.5tb drives...

thats 2 of them new 1.5 Terra-bytes, or 1500 Gig drives, set up in a Raid Span configuration to give me a drive thats 2.75tb formatted.

since setting this up, i re-ripped all my music DVDs to this new drive and i still have room for another 2 years of DVDs before i need to panik about compressing :)

Tayla a Mpeg2 is the same as VOB.

DVDdecrypter to convert dvd chapters into vobs.

then leave them as that.

(unless you have less than 1tb of storage, then you should consider h.264)
 
As stated, if you have the storage, leave them as VOBs IMHO. This requires no conversion, so is nice and quick to rip and gets you the maximum quality from your DVD.

don't worry about it, it's never given me a rash before.... we had chalk and slate when we went to school, can never get used to this new fangled stuff nowadays, lol
