Yes its possible the unit may be faulty. Vestax suggested I take it to a repair shop and I did. Still waiting to hear from them. However.....
Did some testing....I used my Windowz system and went to control panel/sound setting (or something like that) and selected vai-80. Performed the 'testing hardware' button. Saw the leds go up and down while speaking and then the audio actually came out (slight delay maybe due to latency setting) but actually worked. Although not as clear as I expected, I still took the unit in and await a tech to look at it.
Keep in mind, the mic is not a big deal since I don't use the mic while spinning but it is nice knowing the unit works perfectly as designed.
Will update as soon as I know something.

Finally an update for the Vai-80. Yes the unit was faulty. One ic was not soldered on the board properly and was found by one of the techs that worked on it. (how often does that occur?)
Anyway the damn thing works like a dream now. Inputs/outputs/mic perfect!
Problem is, I can only use this mic feature with Traktor Pro because I can choose an input channel and set any of the 4 decks for 'audio through' for the mic. Vdj doesn't have that feature (unless there is a similar one).
I have it's latency set at 1ms as well with no pops/cracks problems whatsoever.
Glad I was patient!
