ok so tonight i had the WORST night out with vdj yet. why does vdj/cue have issues reading firewire hard drives. tonight i had it freeze on me 4 times when loading songs to the point where i had to play from my mp3 player and restart the program and laptop. once i switched from a firewire cable to a usb my freeze problems went away. whats the problem with vdj that it will read a usb drive but firewire not so good? anyone have a solution for this or is it yet another issue that will seem to go unresolved? i must say every time i think cue is stable and working great i have a night like tonight. theres nothing better than having to worry about your PROFESSIONAL product not performing the way it should? every time i loaded a track all i could do was think of what i had to press when it stopped playing music. i am very disapointed in my products performance tonight.

Maybe the drivers for Firewire on your PC are corrupt, I have used Firewire from day one with all my DJ products including VDJ, all the time without issue, infact I would say I get better performance using Firewire, with USB I get a pause when loading songs.
As a test, maybe download the demo of another DJ product and see if you experience the same issues. Or do some file copying to and from your drive using windows explorer or similar, check if you get still have issues freezing issues in other applications.

I doubt the issue is with VDJ, it's probably PC related. Have you checked the power settings to make sure the link is not being shut down to save power?
Uninstall the firewire drive and reinstall with the latest drivers and hopefully you will get it sorted.
Further to that, why do people persist in using external drives?. The one in your PC is generally perfectly good enough, holds plenty music files and using that means there's less chance of anything going wrong. I have used VDJ for over a hundred gigs and it's never crashed once using the drive in my laptop.

it depends on wkat you do really.. i have an external cuz i have my karaoke ripped ,vidos ripped, and mp3"s.
my internal is only 180gb therefore not enough room ,besides i dont think i would want all that on there .if i did i would still have it on external for backup purposes. ;-)

it's a driver problem I have firewire for my soundcard and never a problem with the connection so your ieee1394 connection needs a new driver uninstall , reinstall .
Not fair to blame a windows problem on VDJ
When you reinstall turn off screensaver (if you foolishly use one on your gig machine) and turn off anti virus .......
Drivers are the crucial interface between the app/device and the OS , in this case usually Windows .......otherwise it would be necessary to have a new edition of windows for every new device and program .......
This issue about externals is getting tedious ...... NEVER EVER buy an external OK, this way , you can wisely lose all your music and video as well as windows when the C: crashes
NEVER EVER buy separate drives for audio and video , thereby minimizing wear and tear on the drives and minizing your losses if one crashes
NEVER EVER buy a back up system so that you can just connect your externally stored music and video to it and go on like nothing happened , when your main system has crashed .....
NEVER EVER prepare in advance for these unfortunate scenarios , you don't wanna seem professional ......

i use an external because they don't make inter terabyte hard drives for laptops. as for other dj programs i have serato and it doesn't have ANY issues with ANYTHING. also how could the driver for the hard drive be bad when it was just installed recently when i plugged it in from new about a week ago. im saying it is most likley the issue due to the fact that i have been using a usb drive before this with no problems. and once i switched back to the usb cable it seemed to work better except for a few audio skips. how do i check the power issue settings for the firewore port?

The user with the problem specifically mentioned music ...... I have my entire DJ music collection on the HDD and it only takes up 19.5Gb, so there's absolutely no need to have your music files on an external drive except for backup.
Video & Karaoke are probably different, but most of the issues I've seen on forums are related to external drives rather than inbuilt ones.

also forgot to mention i spoke to another dj who used to use vdj and he said he had a ton of problems with the firewire and a korg zero mixer. saying it would always loose conection etc. hence why i believe that to be the issue.

if you had skips using usb you haven't prepared your system properly for music .......you may have irq conflicts causing dpc's which result in skips
there are no power settings for your firewire port ......just power settings ...... set them all to never
you probably need to disable in device mgr your bluetooth and wifi
if it happened to someone , it'll happen to everyone ??????
you still don't get it ..... the problem isn't firewire ...... i have been using firewire for over 2 years and never a problem associated with that
I DID HAVE TO DO NUMEROUS TWEAKS TO GET IT THAT WAY !
contact the maker of the drive
when i first got the firewire soundcard it caused skips ...... so i called the vendor and got them to email there list of reccomended tweaks , i printed out the 3 page list from the email and did 24 of the 25 tweaks and the skipping went away permanently ......the tweak i didn't do was a reg hack which at the time i was afraid to do .... nowadays i would do it .....
i did this day one when i got it and before any gig .......
next time though I'm gonna bitch about it and blame something
EVERYTHING WORKS .... actually ....... the usb works , the firewire , the software ...... it's getting them all to work together with each other simultaneously that's the tricky part
you probably have the firewall across your usb port .... check that out ... if i remember right , ever since XP sp2 that has been a problem ....i
will look that up if you like .....i don't dislike you personally , just think your mindset is wrong .....have you heard the expression too many chef's in the kitchen ? if you are having system caused problems ( which is what it is , it's not being caused by VDJ) then you need to find the chef that's causing the problem and get rid of it .....

btw , my talk with the highly knowledgeable tech support guy was very informative and so was the email
learn from these problems and going forward you are a better problem solver
the computer hardware is generic and wasn't built for you .....
the OS is generic and wasn't made for you
drivers and anything else that affect compatibility are at least as important as the RAM
the generic platform must be tweaked to your needs , all the individual components work , they just don't automatically work together , intervention on your part is always required
either the computer is your bitch or vice versa ......
Hey Norway , Teary , somebody I want that under my name .........can I get that ??

ok i guess i'll have to start from the beginging. i have been digital for as long as final scratch, then to ssl, now to cue for video. my machine/laptop is tweaked. its not the laptop. it is only used for CUE nothing else. no firewalls, no virus protection NOTHING. its a dedicated machine. with dual core 4 gigs ram and a good video card. i have used cue for about 3 months and this problem has only happened to me yesterday with the NEW firewire hard drive. you say my machine isnt able to handle audio and video, LOL. i was running dpc latency checker after i had the first problem and it said this machine should be able to handle audio and video streaming without any drop outs. the same machine performed GREAT for the last 2 months untill i switched to firewire external. so now that you understand im not some newbie fresh out the box maybe we can get to the reasons its happening rather than "its your laptop"

forgot power settings are set to never its a gig machine i don't need it powering down. also EVERYTHING is disabled i have 21 processes running on VISTA which from what i have seen is about as low as it will go. no network bluetooh none of that is on or even enabled.
Posté Sat 07 Feb 09 @ 10:43 am
Still think it's a drive issue dude. All VDJ does is play the data streamed from the drive. It's the link between the drive and PC that's the issue here. Nothing to do with VDJ.
Posté Sat 07 Feb 09 @ 12:04 pm
Having 21 processes in Vista may also be a problem. I have found that tweaking Vista like we did XP can cause issues. Disabling processes in Vista I personally have found to be a pain as I have found that a lot of processes use other processes and if you disable 1 and there is one that needs it, it will cause issues.
My Vista is running at about 40 processes.
You may really want to look into this.

You may want to recover Vista and try again. Disabling processes should only be done if absolutely necessary. Most machines run VDJ in their core state and do not need tweaked.
Could also be a faulty drive or cable.

you don't seem like a newbie and it sounds like a nice machine
still i did tweaks that were very specific for firewire ...... mine were for XP media center edition ....i don't know if those tweaks would apply in vista
contact the vendor for recomendations
some of the tweaks i did , i ended up asking myself " what the hell does this have to do with firewire ?" such as setting the cd/dvd drive secondary ide channel to ultra dma instead of the default which was factory installed for backwards compatibility ..... but the tweaks worked

i think i figured it out!!! after some long hard testing yesterday i was finding more and more problems as i "fixed" one. i switched usb cables and ran with my old usb hd i had been using. the original problem was solved but still having issues with various effects etc. after some long hard thinking i remembered doing some recent changes to some drivers in device manager. i went in and seen that both the ac and bat drivers where disabled. i renabled them and played for about 30 minutes in house with no problems. packed it up took a nap and went to work. well last night ran it in my sat spot for 2.5 hours without one glitch. so in essance it was a driver but not for the hd. i will try the firewire drive soon to see if that helps the problem i was having. thanks to all who put in there 2 cents any info/knowledge is good info!
