Same here, I have 2 Maxtors, great for the price, and 5 year warrenty, can't fault that!!!

I was never a big fan of Maxtor. They always seem to die after about a year (tho this was my expeirence about 4 years ago, I build many computers) I know use Seagate Hard drives. They also have 5 year warranty and (knock on wood) havent had any issues. ALso for good prices check out www.newegg.com

I have a WD My Book 1tb (ext), great drive.

IMHO stay away from the Seagate 1.5 Tb drives, I heard they are nothing but trouble.

Coming from a 10 Year PC Tech, And An avid hard drive user and supportee (DJ Friends needing help with hard drives) I would say to stick with the Western Digital My Books. Seagate was good back in the day but alot of their newer lines have had problems. I've had a few maxtors fail on me in the pass, and they tend to get real hot. Currently I have 6 WD Mybooks and very happy with them. Best Buy has the 1TB Home Edition with eSata, USB and Firewire on sale this week for 139 which is a pretty good deal. My other DJ buddy just bought one and I just copied all his music from his previous 1TB to this one for a backup JUST IN CASE

Good Luck

not a maxtor or seagate fan .... maxtor's do run hot

WD are good

my newest is a 400 gb CAUI 7200 rpm , preformatted NTFS 81.00 US ( i have amazon's prime delivery service so i got it overnighted for 3.99 ....)

i was just looking at amazon

Lacie has a 2tb drive with fw800 and raid .....225.00 ..... if you wanna live extra large ......

If you read the reviews on external HD's (try Amazon user reviews), you'll read that virtually every model has failed for someone at some stage. External HD's are sensitive full stop, if you buy one for the benefit of storing NEW files then you'll need to buy a second as a "replica" drive, a back-up, otherwise you're running a risk of losing potentially irreplaceable files.

As I said, when I was looking to buy an external HD I read through a lot of user reviews for each brand and various model, if a product is popular and has had a number of reviews, the chances are that it's failed for someone and there are a few "1 star" reviews.

That said, I found that Western Digital drives are less susceptible to failure based on their user reviews.

I bought a 250gb WD with the fancy neon lights, it was expensive but I've had it for a year without any problems and I'm about to buy a much larger WD external.

I really can not stress enough: NEVER DEPEND ON ONE DRIVE, ALWAYS BACK IT UP (AND GET ONTO THE DANCEFLOOR).

I have (2) Seagate 1TB Internal Drives.
I have (1) Cavalry 1TB External Drive
I have (1) Lacie 1TB External Drive
I have (1) Cavalry 500 Gig External Drive
I have (1) Fantom 500 Gig External Drive
I have (1) Iomega 500 Gig External Drive
I have a Commodore 64 tape back up. (Bet you don't, Other than Teary... he's an old bastard)

I have never had a problem with any of these drives, my smaller drives are only for backing up video so they don't get a real work out. My Seagate drives get a REAL workout to the tune of 4 nights a week, five hours a night.

I have found reading "reviews" on the Internet frustrating, you will find horror stories about every drive listed above as well as Western Digital Drives. The people that normally write reviews are the ones who got a lemon. I'm willing to bet there are a few Lamborghini lemons out there.

Just as BAGPUSS said: "you'll read that virtually every model has failed for someone at some stage."

I really think it's all about luck, as Clint Eastwood said in the movie: "Well punk, do you feel lucky"

PS: While I'm here does anyone know if the next VDJ update will be coming out before I'm too old to have sex?
Kradcliffy that was for you :-)

Amen, killed many but never killed a Seagate.

You can't be that old Renee.
The next version is going to take time with all of the features, plug ins, controllers and settings that need to be checked and checked again.

Rick, it's good to see you back posting, the forum has been a LITTLE weird in the last couple of months.
I'm no spring chicken, my father worked for "Big Blue" and before there was an "Internet" we had a local BBS running a 500 baud modem. (long distance charges applied) LMAO

As far as the next update I'm not running the last update.... no need to fix what's not broke.

Rick always comes out for the girls...

And I'm honoured that you quoted me a sentence before quoting Clint Eastwood :), I feel less of a "punkish".

BagDIDDY "honoured" ..... I'll give you a "Do Over"... you little punk!

i shoulda said my caui is a Cavalry

my main drive at the moment is a 500 gb WD and it gets 45 hours a week at the strip club plus mobil gigs , it gets a workout and i still race those wheel barrows

i get accused of exaggeration about the hours at the strip club , be happy to provide any proof you like

i actually ONLY HAVE SEX when VDJ issues an update .......

I have also never had issues with Seagate drives, however I have been hearing bad things about their newest 1.5 tb drives.

scribe i have the imoega 500gb the last year r so for my karaoke.wouldnt say its gets a hammering but i havent had a problem with it
