I need some comments on a portable PC I am building for music, video, and karaoke. I may also try to run lighting on a second monitor from the same machine.
Here is what I am looking at:
- Thermaltake micro ATX lanbox
- Ultra x4 micro ATX 400w, 21A modular power supply (biggest I found that will fit in micro box)
- XFX MG-63Mi-7159 motherboard
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 processor 2.66Hz OEM
- 4G OCZ Platinum XTC Dual channel PC6400 DDR2-800MHz Ram
- WD 1TB, 7200RPM, SATA-300 HD (maybe a 2nd one for programs will see what you say)
- Thermaltake MAX ORB heatsync
- Creative Labs SB x-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty PCIe sound card
- Still looking for a good 3D video card. Was looking at the Galaxy GeForce 9800 GTX + Video Card - 512MB GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, Dual Link DVI, HDMI
- Still looking for a drive that will rip and burn DVD, CD, and CD-G (karaoke)
Any advice would be great.

Sounds like a ncie setup to me.
Would definately recommend a second drive - unless you are storing music on a external drive. It is recommended not to have the operating system and music etc on the same disc in case of a drive problem.

Take a look at the shuttle. The latest model support the i7. When you build a pc for video-mixing you always need the fastest components.
You can use the fastest drive (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=459) for your programs and operating system
and a 2tb harddisk for the mp3s and vobs.
Use an external drive for backup.
Spent more money now to build a future-proof pc for tomorrow.

You will definately like the box, bowever you will need to be creative if you are running more than 1 hard drive and a large graphics card as you will need to take out the hd mounts. I put 1 HD where it was supposed to go and 1 where the floppy drive would be.

Thanks for the comments. That VelociRaptor looks pretty sweet, I may go with that. I will definately go with two HDs though. Any ideas for a video card with watts ansd amps available on the power supply. (400W / 21A) I believe it also has to be a micro.

Does anyone have experience with Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit OS? Good or Bad with VDJ

How about ATI vs Nvid for graphics?
Posté Tue 10 Mar 09 @ 9:50 am
Come on guys, is this all the help I can get!!!
Posté Tue 10 Mar 09 @ 6:30 pm
As video card, I suggest ATI.

64 bit OS will only buy you better performance ultimately with 64 bit applications. Stick with 32 bit for less driver headaches.

For the newer video cards you MUST run VISTA if they are designed for dx10. I run the ATI HD 4850 in 3 machines and it runs great!!

For DJ use and Virtual DJ stick with Vista 32-bit. Modern cards, Virtual DJ and Windows XP can cause video mixing problems - I have not noticed any issues with my own setup (DX10 card and XP) and am not sure if it's mainly a laptop thing. DJ equipment in general does not have 64-bit support with few exceptions.
Consider getting an Intel motherboard unless SLI is a must, from experience they are generally more stable than Nvidia's offerings and you will not run into driver issues. However, the only P45 MATX motherboard I can find on Newegg is double the price:

I don't know how large your case is but the 9800 is a very large card, make sure it will fit. If not, consider the ATI 3870 or 4670. Virtual DJ users generally report better experiences with ATI cards.

Hello All, Brand New here.
(Andrew87 wrote: DJ equipment in general does not have 64-bit support with few exceptions).
Does anybody know what these exceptions are? Just ordered Toshiba Satellite A355D Laptop with Vista 64-bit...oops?
Wanting to purchase Virtual Dj for Music, Video, Karaoke & Lighting. Would appreciate any help
preventing me from returning this computer...if possible. Thank you.

Totally agree with this concept, I use it myself. and with 64 and V7 coming along to jam the gears, XP is a safer bet that all your gear will work now and tomorrow.
And before you go building this consider a Shuttle.
I have a SN 25 that is now 3 years old that holds 4 drives and is a powerhouse.
The drives were changed and upped to 750g this last winter.
My dvdrom is in an external enclosure because I never use it and don't want to carry it.
If I need to play a cd I can do so with my lighting laptop which is patched through the main sound card.
I do exactly what you do with it ie: audio, video and karaoke even lighting is on that if I need it.
There is driver software called Shuttle Tools that allows me to crank up the fans to max which keeps things really cool.
I fun a 64cfu fan in the box to pull heat with and the Tools panel shows it.
At 100db who cares about fan noise anyway.
OEM XP Pro is what I run to stay away from the bloatware and it never sees the internet ever.
You can see this build in my blog if you want to see how it was done.

Went to a 19" monitor and it rides in a padded laptop case perfectly and now have a Fast Track Pro replacing the U46DJ and a DN4500 replacing the DAC 3.
To the other side I now have a VGA powered DA which keeps my second monitor always active in settings regardless if I am actually connected to a device or not, which is really nice when you don't want the video monitor window popping up.
Anyway, just wanted to mention this option as it has worked perfectly for me and I've built a few.
You want a Plextor cd burner to rip karaoke.
