I needed to rent speakers for a function for 250 people, the facility can hold upto 300 people my question was would a the yorkville e215 which are 2 15's - 1000 Watts (paired) and a powered sub be overkill? The facility is a gymnasium.

If their budget allowed and there were no noise restrictions, I would probably do that gig with a set of double 18 front loaded subs (if not two sets of 18s) and at least two, if not four 15s and horns. Really depends on the gig - you need more for a school dance than you would for an 80th birthday.
I see people quoting a lot less though - things like four hundred people with one set of 15s and a powered 15 sub so I guess it just depends on your personal preference and what your customers have to compare with in the area.

For up to 500 people in a gym I use 2 cerwin-vega instense (15") speakers and an Earthquake sub. Over 500, I add two more Intense speakers. Still get complaints from the principal that his office is vibrating.
