Sujet: Audio skipping/stuttering on my new Vista Laptop...Help Please..

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Hello Everyone...
I have been using virtual Dj now for about 5/6 years. It's been absolutely great. (Thank you to the fine
programmers!) I have been using Toshiba laptops, and I rarely (if ever) had a problem on my older machines with
windows XP. But now, I recently purchased a new Toshiba (Satellite E105) with Vista Home Premium (64-bit) pre-
installed.
And it's been very frustrating. I mean...it doesn't skip continuously, but 2 or 3 hours into the gig...my audio will
drop out for a second or so and then come back in. Or sometimes...the audio will simply sound "grainy". I have tried
disabling and even uninstalling any unnecessary programs. I have turned off all of Vista's fancy visual effects. I
have tried turning off my virus protection (AVG) and even disconnecting my wireless internet...but, none of
this has solved the problem. I am wondering if I should try and "downgrade" to Windows XP? Although that will be
tricky, since Microsoft doesn't seen to sell XP discs anymore. One thing I have not tried is using a laptop
"cooler"...I never seemed to need one in the past...and so I didn't think it would be necessary now....but, I'm
truly running out of ideas...If you have any other suggestions, I would be very gratefull....Thank you...Tom

P.S. I am using the Numark DJIO external soundcard...

I think it's something to with something in your Vista. I have the same problem with my Satellite but has been known to in my PC. Since I don't use my PC at all except as a back up. The problem is that it doesn't happen every show for me so I can't narrow it down. I Thaught about security, programs running, ext.. I don't think it has happend since I reloaded my OS. It's so part my show that I don't pay attention anymore because it doesn't do it all the time. It seems to happen around the same time period during the show when it does happen though.

I wonder if it has something to do with the heating / cooling system?

Try running the DPC latency checker and see what that throws up.

Thanks a buch everyone...
I appreciate you suggestions...
I am starting to become convinced that it must be a heat problem...although, the laptop does not seem unusually warm to the touch.
I have noticed however that the problem occurs olot more in this one particular club where I work...in this situation, I have the laptop nestled into kind of a "corner", which would certainly seem to restrict ventilation...thanks again...Tom

I purchased a laptop rack(stanton uber rack) and that solved heating problems. Also with vista, go to start---run, type msconfig then go to startup tab and uncheck programs that you don't want to start running in the background. then go to win .ini tab and uncheck mail and other programs you don't want running in the background. Then go to device manager and disable the wi-fi card, onboard LAN and other devices sharing the same IRQ as your USB device.

Last night it happend again and it happend around the usual time. This morning as I'm reading the yesterdays threads here on the forum I remembered the event last night. I decided to check my security program. I turn off wifi and security but I noticed that my security is set to update everyday at a certain time wich is around the same time that it stutters / or freeze. Just thinking here, my system updates but when it finishes it sends a signal the computer which makes it freeze for a second. I just so happend to check the time stamp of when it finished the update.

Now that I think about it, the nights that it doesn't freeze is when I going into my security and manually stop the program. I think I've been just exiting the program out of quick launch but the program was still running in the background. HOLY SHIT... the mental error we do because we do the same thing. This is how I blew out a HDD because a minor mental lasp. I hooked up laptop cord to the HDD and vice versa. I did everything in the natural order but slight mental lasp cost me.... AMAZING

Double check you security switch... Your probably having the save issues as me since I have a toshiba.

I've been having the same problem, I think. In my case I'd describe the problem as milliseconds of hesitation before the audio stream continues, and it only happens a few times in my set. I'm running on a laptop with Vista Business.

I'm surprised that this is a problem at all, since my controller (the Hercules RMX) has ASIO drivers, which are meant to address exactly the issue of latency. So perhaps this implies that the problem is with VDJ rather than the sound card.

A friend of mine just gave me a suggestion. I have not done a set since we talked, so I haven't tested this, but it sounds worth passing on.

Hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE and select the Task Manager. Click on the Processes tab. Find the virtualdj.exe process (that might not be the right name depending upon the version you're running). Right click on it and select "Set Priority". Select "Realtime" for maximum priority.

Note that you'll have to do this every time you invoke the program. If you shut the program down--or possibly even Hibernate--you'll have to reset the priority.

Try running the DPC latency checker and see what that throws up.

tried this and it works perfectly now with no drop outs.

the problem device was my network adapter which i disable everytime i use vdj and just re-enable it.

the analyser you down load showed that all was ok when i disable network adaptor in device manager and sound played ok. when i re-enable d it the graphs shot up to red and the drop[ outs restarted.

thanks so much jimmy b for your help.

rich.

I also tryed the dpc, i disable all the problem devices...everything is green but the drop out in the sound still appears.........any idea?
