Sujet: Those little tiny mini hard drives ??

Is anyone on here using and having good luck with the USB-powered mini hard drives, or is their transfer rate too slow for videos. I had some videos play okay on the tv screen but were jumpy on the skin. The cpu % seem to run higher than usual all night too. I don't remember these same problems before when I was using another larger ext. powered hard drive. Can we begin a discussion on those mini usb-powered drives and shed some light on how they work with VDJ and why they may NOT be working as expected??

Anyone??

I wouldn't use them for DJing, especially for music videos and karaoke. I just did a You Tube video on external hard drives and I mentioned how DJ have problems with these USB powered drives "Passport" is the name of one brand.

i wouldnt use a passport for Video Dj ying. i have 3 of them and its for audio only. They are good to use but i wont buy one that's over 160 gigs. Its gonna be almost 2 years using the same HD's. The one i mainly use is the 120 gig.
 
I have a 500gb passport, with no issues. They have a high-speed USB 2.0 interface so I don't see how using them with video would be a problem.

Hmmm, Can someone explain how these are problems with videos. Something to do wiyh power supply from computer, etc, etc.
There's gotta be something there that causes these things to be useless for video's??

Anyone add more??
 
I would assume that, since it is USB powered instead of external powered (plugs into an outlet) that since video files are alittle more demanding to upload/play that it would cause an issue cause it is drawing so much power through that USB port from the computer/other components. thats just my assumption. feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I was thinking that too but it seems that there are laptops out there running videos well, with other things attached to their usb ports that grab power. I think the ample electrical power is still supplied to the computer regardless, i think, but somehow the ram of the computer is affected by too many usb devices drawing power, not sure why that is though. I know my searching functions were running really slow last night with the mini HD.
 
 
I too have been using a mini external hardrive.

I use mine for music, karaoke and videos and have not come across a single problem with them.

I have used mine for around a year now with a 2.5" sata hard drive inside a mini enclosure and never sufferd any problems at all.

I have 4 usb on my laptop 1 is used for dj io sound card , 1 is used for my total control and the others for my mini hard drives and none of these are powerd externally only by the usb.

I have done several gigs for around 6 hours at a time over the year i have been using mini hard drives and not had a problem with them
 
 
I use a segate powered External drive for vids and use my passport for audio my vid collection is on a 1tb drive and my audio collection is on a 500gb drive not to mention my computer's HD is 350gb...

NO PROBLEMS at all.. (need wood to knock on now!!)

The problem is that most of the small external hard drives use mechnism that spins 5400 rounds per minute - just like in some older/cheper laptops. Hard drives used in desktop computers are usually 7200rpm (or even faster) and therefor have a higher data transfer capability.

Videos are larger files than audio, so they require more bandwith. That's it in a nutshell.

Yes, I understand that as well, but the real purpose of a powered hub is to supply enough power to the things connected to it as the computer will only dish out so much. The computer typically keeps enough electrical power (wattage) to run itself. What i am looking for is some kind of explanation why the computer itself is not recommended for use with a usb HD, even when the HD is the only usb outlet being used.It's got to be something in the transfer rates but can't seem to understand what and why?

Hmmm, think I'm getting it, all except for the bandwidth part. Could you explain the difference between bandwidth in a powered vs. non-powered HD and how that would affect the playing of videos?

Also, the small HD is the same speed as the laptop HD. both 5400 rpm.
