I just converted an mpeg1 file to mp4 using the handbreak program and now the file logo is different to those mp4's that I already had, take a look it's the top one. Looks like two people like the accounts logo within MS Windows control panel

Under Windows Vista, that icon represents that a folder or file is shared out via SMB (so people can access it from the network). Does HandBrake do something with file shares? It seems a bit odd to see it on a file (and not a folder).

just curious, why convert from mpeg1 to mp4? you will loose on picture quality.
