Hey mate,
i had a issue, when i install Vista and at the same time (Update) the Internet Explorer8.
After i turn off, the IE8 installation and let the other updates run, all was fine.
You have already installed SP2?
If yes, you can try, to let one by one update run.
good luck mate

Get Windows 7 and don't look back.

This has always worked for me and doesn't appear to have negative consequences but exercise caution:
- Start 'Task Manager' (ctrl + shift + escape) and click 'Show processes from all users' to elevate permissions.
- Enter the 'Services' tab and locate the service with description 'Windows Update'. Right-click on it and select 'Stop Service'.
- User 'Explorer' to browse to 'C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution', delete all files in this directory.
- Either start the 'Windows Update' service using 'Task Manager' or restart your computer.
- Run 'Windows Update', it will act as if it's never been run before but will not display already installed updates.
