Sujet: What does a new club DJ need?

Ce topic est ancien et peut contenir des informations obselètes ou incorrectes.

Apologies for the basic questions - been searching around the forums and noticed a few suggestions come up.

I'm looking to just play tracks, no real mixing, and had presumed all I'd need is a laptop, Virtual DJ, external harddrive and music source.

Now I'm beginning to think I'm missing a lot of the picture.

1. I was thinking of going Mac as I figured the onboard sound card should be pretty good spec - however, is it normal or expected to have an external sound card to run through as well?

2. Do I really need an external mixer as well?

Simply because I saw mentions of Hercules RMX and Denons being recommended, so now I'm getting confused about what sort of rig I need to start with just for playing.

3. Also, I had thought I'd need to buy in loads of CD's and rip them, but am I going to get any joy buying music from iTunes to download and play? If ripping, was recommended I ensure MP3's should be above 192kbps - not sure if I need specific ripping software for this?

I'm really sorry for the newb questions as I appreciate it can take patience to answer them - I'm fully committed to moving forward with DJ'ing, but still uncertain as to the technical set up, so hopefully I'll be able to start answering questions from others soon enough once I get some experience under my belt. :)

I would never recommend an onboard soundcard as the sound quality between that and -say- an Audio 8 DJ or even a Maya44 is even noticable to the untrained ear.

If you're thinking of directly linking your PC to your amp, i would say... don't. An external mixer is something i really really do recommend. :) If you're just going to link it to a stereo system a mixer is not necessary.

I use tunebite to convert my iTunes tracks into 320kpbs MP3's. :)

@ Brite.. If you want to be a club dj.. You need to buy equipment to mix. There is no such thing as no real mixing. If you are djiing only audio, You dont need to buy a MAC. You can get any laptop that has a core 2 duo processor.

Equipment you can buy.

If you want to DJ hands on..

2 Pioneer CDJ 800's, Sound card (M-Audio Connectiv) & any 2 channel or 4 channel mixer, your choice.

If you like pushing buttons (Midi Comtroller)

Denon Hc4500 Or Numark DMC 2 plus and 2 or 4 channel mixer

Or

Herclues RMX, VCI 300, M-Audio Xponent. Hecrules is the cheapest but the Xponent is alittle more money but alot better & Then you have a VCI 300 which is more on point and cost more money.

The question is.. What type of dj you are ? Hands on or pushing buttons ?

Many thanks for the replies - looking more at button pushing - ie, playing recorded tracks.

If you are just starting out, the Hercules DJ Console RMX is a good choice. It gives you everything you need - An all-in-one controller, built-in sound card and a free Console Edition of VirtualDJ. It also entitles you to upgrade at a considerable discount to VirtualDJ Pro.

Many thanks again, very much appreciated - now ordered a Hermes and Vaio running Windows 7.

Can't wait to start practicing. :)

Don't just concede to saying you don't want to mix, I would suggest that if you want to take DJing seriously that you learn to mix and buy equipment that enables you to do so. Otherwise you may as well just put yourself into the "iPod" DJ category from the get-go, which as far as I'm concerned isn't DJing at all. Even if you don't plan to learn to mix and you just plan to 'play songs', at least if you have something resembling a DJ set-up you will at least be viewed as a DJ. Otherwise the perception of you by anyone looking to hire your services will be that you're not doing anything they couldn't do themselves with an iPod and you should sell yourself not as a DJ, but rather as an iPod programmer.

I've seen a lot of DJs who can't mix and aren't doing anything other than just play songs back to back, but at least they have DJ equipment and look the part.

+1 great suggestion for any DJ from basic to advanced. The RMX gets more done, for less money, than most people give it credit for.

Hi mate.

I am wondering, because you are not looking at mixing, is Club DJ the way you want to go? Would radio work be more what you are interested in. My suggestion if this is the case would be to try and get into your local hospital radio station and once you have built up some experience, then move on to local radio.

Club DJing is a competitive world so what Dizzy was saying realy rings true. If you have some clubs in youre area, go and visit them, see what is happening in youre local scene and check out what the DJ's are doing. Word of advise tho, dont interupt them when they are working they won't thank you for it. See if you can arrange to meet them at the end of there set.

The equipment side is being covered so I just wanted to throw a couple of ideas to you.

BTW basic questions are great so dont worry about asking them.

Good luck

Daz
