A number of years back I had my entire CD collection stolen along with some sound gear, Now although I lost the CDs, surely the thief doesn't legally own the copyrighton the discs he stole!
I would think that I would still own that copyright ....... and the right to have or acquire backup copy's of my original music collection?

Sorry mate in our Police State Paradise it is actually illegal to make any copies of anything period. Even backups of originals you bought and have receipts for. We have some of the harshest copyright laws in the world. Even taking a cd you bought and making an mp3 so you can play it in VDJ is illegal.

Hi mate
Ownership of the disc does not give you ownership of the copyright. The Copyright is owned by the Artist or Distributer/Publisher. When you buy a CD the Copyright owner licences you to use the material for Private Use Only. So even playing an origional CD on VDJ to a crowd is not legal unless you have an apropriate licence for this.
Copyrights are not well inforced because it is virtualy impossible to catch everyone infringing copyright laws. Legal cases only tend to be brought against big offenders. Websites allowing free downloads/sellers of pirated discs and so on.

We dont have copyright licenses for djs to play in NZ. It is up to the venue to make sure they have appropriate licensing with APRA and PPNZ. Its worth checking their websites if you havent already.

A similar setup works in the UK as well but if you are a mobile DJ you can pay your own licence if you want/need to to cover for PPL in unlicenced premesis.
