Should I be bumping the gain up in VDJ, it normally stays at 0db

I would not play with the software gain too much. If you feel you need more control, I suggest an external EQ like the Behringer 1502.

Hi mate
You should only need to adjust the gain to provide a match between the two tracks you are playing. Most of the time very little adjustment is needed. The automatic feature can sometimes make mistakes if the track has a long quiet intro but most of the time its ok. Use your own judgment and check tracks on PFL/CUE before you use them and adjust if required.

Also, it's sometimes better to be in the - rather than the + for the software gain.
If you go too far into the + you're at risk of clipping :(
